If you include the ILO's in the Discovery Range then HPSIM should be able to match them to the Server.
The ILO's themselves can send SNMP Traps. Thsy can also be monitored for connectivity, which is quite useful as you don't want to wait until you need i to find out you cannot access it.

Most of my HP servers appear as unmanaged in SIM. I am able to deploy Support PAcks to the servers and can see general health. Problem is when I try to collect data for the servers the task fails immediately. I receive the following email notoification:

Event Name: Unable to complete Data Collection Event originator: alddevap05 Event Severity: Minor Event received: 03-May-2006, 16:57:28 Event description: The Data Collection task did not complete. The target system may not be running a supported instrumentation protocol, such as SNMP, WBEM or DMI

SNMP is enabled but does not appear to work correctly, I am hoping I have missed something fundamental but cannot work out what it is.

Help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

From what I understand you have SNMP installed on all servers. Have you configured your host servers with community strings (e.g. Public & Private), and have you configured them also to send traps to SIM server and also to themselves?
These same strings need to be also entered in the global security settings on your SIM server.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have set alll except the sending of traps to the servers themselves. I will try this now.

I have tried this now with the same result. Does the snmp service need to run under a domain account?

Thanks very mcuh for the help with this. In the end I followed the article posted by Ferry which did the trick. I did have to delete the servers from the database and re-add them as suggested, after which all data started filtering through.

the community strings on both the CMS and the monitored servers should match. Check that first.

Related to this topic:

Should the IP addresses of the iLO interfaces be included in the Discovery Range? Since they don't have SNMP, it is starting to dawn on me (duh) that they shouldn't be, but I wanted to be sure.

Right now, when the collection triggers, I am getting A LOT of these messages:

Event Name: Unable to complete Data Collection Event originator: 10.3.45.21 Event Severity: Minor Event received: 08-Jul-2006, 00:26:26 Event description: The Data Collection task could not complete due to a timeout or the task was stopped by the user. A timeout indicates problems with the instrumentation (SNMP/WBEM/DMI) on the target machine

Last note, if I take them out of the discovery, I would still get alerted if an iLO failed or stopped working since it is part of my server attributes, correct?
