The general rule of thumb is

<500 servers and <5000 events = MSDE
<5000 servers and <50000 events = SQL

These are just broad indications, however. There are users who are quite happy with MSDE who have more than 500 servers. There are users with less than 500 servers that swear that SQL is the only thing to use. Part of it comes down to how snappy you want response to be and the configuration of the machine hosting hpSIM.

However, with your numbers, I'd say you're pretty safe with MSDE. (If you choose wrong, moving to SQL isn't a big deal)

I am managing a Proliant/HPUX environment of around 100 servers. I would like to start using HPSIM 4.0 to get a handle on this. What criteria would I use to determine which database to use (MSDE or MSSQL)??

Thanks in advance!!
