You should install the management agents and make sure SNMP is configured correctly.

The SNMP Service needs to be installed. Go to SNMP Service properties -> SNMP Trap -> Add a trap that points to your CMS (Central Management Server). Then when hardware events occur, an alert will be sent to the CMS and can be viewed via the Management Console.

If you are running ProLiant servers, when you build the server, do you follow the Smart Start CD? The PSP (ProLiant Support Pack) is installed as part of the SmartStart CD. The PSP contains updated drivers and all the agents necessary to monitor the hardware on the server.

HP SIM Information Library:
- This is a good source of information about installing, configuring and using HP SIM features.

This is something I am working on setting up myself, but to get other alerting (power supply failure, hard drive failure), do this on the server:

Start - Programs - HP Management Agents â Event Notifier Config
- Follow the instructions on this Wizard and when you get to the last page, look at all the Events (Click on Events) you will get alerting on, itâ s pretty cool!

Note: The way I described about, you will get hardware failures sent to the CMS. If you want an email notification about those failures, then follow what I described about.

It talks about setting up a read community string in the SNMP Properties (Security tab) and setting it up on the CMS via the Management Console. You can setup the Global Protocol settings to use a read community string (I use "Public").
Hi Malli -

That is true, the HP Event Notifier sends the messages directly to your mail server, and not to CMS. You need the SNMP Trap configured to send the hardware alerts (trap) to your CMS.

You can test that alerts are setup to go to the CMS. Once you have the SNMP Trap setup in SNMP Service properties, go to Control Panel - HP Management Agents - SNMP Settings tab - click "Send Test Trap" and a test trap should be sent to your CMS and show up as a Major Uncleared Event.

If you have your SNMP Trap configured to send alerts to your CMS, and Automatic Event Handling setup to email alerts on that system to you, then setting up HP Event Notifier probably doesn't need to be setup, it would give you redundant alerts. Please let me know if this makes sense!
