Well, As it turns out I got Around it by adding the servers that would only resolve to ip addresses from our "secondary" DNS Structure to the local hosts file. They resolve correctly by adding the hosts names to the local hosts file on the server. I still want an edit device function like CIM 7 had. That would be much easier.

In the OLD CIM 2.1 you could edit a device and give it the correct machine name if it was discovered as an IP Address as the machine name. How do you do this in HP SIM?
Thanks.

The only way I can think of from within HPSIM s to use a Hosts file to resolve the name.
Otherwise, add the device to your DNS, it seems to need both the forward and reverse lookups to identify the device.
Certainly if I just added the device to the Reverse Lookup table it still didn't resolve the IP Address to a name, whereas CIM 7 seemed to.

Well I resolved my problem thanks to the above reply. Your Servers must be in forward and reverse lookup in DNS for the device to be identified correctly.
I dont like that. Future Versions need to have an Edit device function like CIM 7 did.

We'll look at this - we assumed (incorrectly it seems) that both forward and reverse name resolution worked in all environments.

I assume it is reverse lookups that you don't want - is that for security?

No it's not for security. It's because in our environment we have 2 different DNS Structures. One is windows 2000 DNS and the other is Unix DNS. For some reason though, My hosts that dont live in the primary Win2k DNS only resolve with IP's and not host names. I'm still working on that one.
arrggghhh.

Scott,
No not security.
I discovered it here because I only put it into the Reverse Lookups, I thought that it would only need to resolve the IP Address to a Name. But it seems that it must then resolve the name back to IP as a check. It was this that caught me out for a bit.

I only wanted to have to maintain the AD DNS Reverse lookups for non-AD Servers.

Please add the edit function back. I shouldn't have to worry about dns configuration just to add a system to monitor. All the other versions had this functionality.

Here - Here! PLEASE put back the edit function of NAME and TYPE! I can't understand how the developers could leave this function out?!? This is a prime example why admins hate programers! :)

I'm just installing the "new" hpsim version and I can't believe how helpful this forum is!

Thanx to all that help!

I agree with previous posts. Put this feature back please. I have a server that had it's name changed and I dn't want to make a discovery. It was so easy with CIM7.
