hp sim dont send me critical report by email !

hi all
my name is ashkan, i am beginner at hpsim.
I want that hpsim report me crtitical events sevre by email.

for example: hp sim send me report by email, when power supply server or hard disk server and etc... is fault .

additional information: i have a 15 hp server,and i use hpsime that installed on pc(p4+2GB ram). i give simple report from hpsim by email that explain :"name server:1 , 2 , .. and system is reachable" or sometimes system is not reachable" while i need critical report from my servers.report picture is attached.or this link:

Pleas help me and step by step guide me.

ashkan,

go to options - events - automatic event handling - new task.

give a name to your task
pick your events - all or pick specific ones
select your systems - probably all in this case
select actions - send e-mail
time filter - just press next if you want all the time
review and press finish

this should start immediately, if you wish to disable or edit the definition go back to
options - events - automatic event handling - manage tasks and select the appropriate task.

the appropriate mail server information needs to be entered in the
options - events - automatic event handling - e-mail settings tab also

hi mark hunt,
i do that,step by step.but when i unpluged one of the two power supply server,hp sim dont send me report!

is problem from server?or my config in hp sim?
and what am i doing with my configuration server in my server for example: is must be install specify software on my server that is my target report? i know that hp system insight managment and hp system tools was installed however when hp system insight managment running on my server ,that is error :the page is can not be displayed.

pleas guide me

to clarify :-

is snmp enabled on this server and set up to send traps to hp sim ?

you cannot get to the web page for management agent on the server is the agent running ?

is there a firewall in the way ? (ports 2301 or 2381 (http or https) need to be enabled).

are you currently getting e-mail reports

does hp sim show any events at all for this
server ?

rep: I know that snmp was installed on my server(dl380 G4) (os:windows 2003 enterprise).and i dont know how enable and setup snmp!

yes ,i use windows firwall.

no,unfortunatly hp sim only show uniform event from system:"system is reachable" or "system unreachable", this is picture link

i had checked my server,snmp installed on that. but i do not know how config snmp services and snmp trap at =>start=>admin tools=>services

and what i need software?is must be installed proliant support pack(PSP),or not.

ashkan,

i would suggest that you go through the documentation on the install and setup for sim there are some notes on the setup required on target systems. i am not a windows admin , perhaps some of the other contributors here will have more concise details concerning this.

can anyone help me at snmp setting on windows 2003 ? i will want receive snmp report from my server by hpsim that installed on one pc with os 2003. also my servers have os 2003.

In HPSIM under the Options / Global Settings you'll need to enter community names, I think be default these are public and private.

On a remote server under services, sselect the properties for snmp, you'll need to enter the same community here. Under allowed hosts you need localhost as well as the name or IP address of the hpsim server.
Under Traps you again need to put in the HPSIM Server and community name.

This allows HPSIM to access the server via snmp and also if an agent finds a problem for an snmp trap to be sent back to the HPSIM Server.

I'd recommend searching this forum for other items on snmp and reading those through.

thanks your reply, i was doing your Guidance,i have installed hp sim on pc that is ip static 192.168.0.60. so i have enter 192.168.0.60 in destination trap managed server. is 192.168.0.60 correct?192.168.0.60 is hpsim server!

another issue:
in hp sim server =>open hp system insight manager =>tools=>system information=>system managment home page , but this page shown one of the my servers,why? becuse i want send test trap from this page.

i have cogigured email for hpsim report and only i have received unform report:
Event serverity : critical
Description: The current system is no longer reachable from the central management server, hardware status polling has marked this system as not responding

i am confusing, i need receive report from hp sim when my power supply server is fault or critical happen.

i have another problem, ihave configured data cllection but i have recievd this message from hp sim by email:

Event description: The Data Collection task could not complete due to a timeout or the task was stopped by the user. A timeout indicates problems with the instrumentation (SNMP/WBEM/DMI) on the target machine

how fix it?

ashkan,

the reachability of your servers is done by icmp AFAIK so your sim server does seem to be able to ping all of these servers. this will only tell you whether the remote server is down
or network connectivity has been lost.

your problem is with snmp between hp sim and your servers, rob has posted the instructions on enabling snmp on your windows servers.

at a dos prompt if you input netstat -a do you see entries for ports 161 and 162 udp(might show as snmp + snmptrap) on all of your servers and your hp sim server.
in the same output you should also see entries for ports 2301 and 2381 which is the sim agent.
if you don't see these snmp and/or sim agent is not running.

i don't know whether your windows firewall would block snmp traffic, perhaps others would comment on this.

as has been commented earlier a thorough read of the install and setup guide is recommended.

Oops i have not ports 2301 and 2381 for agent.

and on my server :

UDP support:snmp *:*
UDP support:snmptrap *:*

How run agent? i see snmp on your start=>cotrolpannel=>admin tools=> services

and i have configured by this link

and also i install snmp ,wbem by hpsim on your server . and i see hp agent on my cotrol pannel . i send snmp test trap successfully but i can't receve by email!

ashkan,

if you have an event showing in hp sim from the test trap you sent from one of your servers and you have not received an e-mail then you need to check that the task you originally set up is enabled (there is also a column for last run time what does this say), if so then check the e-mail set up in the task.

On the server being monitored the IP address or name should be in the Trap Destination.
To test snmp go to Control Panel and run up the HP Management Agents GUI.
Use the SNMP Trap Send, that should trigger a Moajor Event in HPSIM for the server being monitored. Test this and let us know the results.

If you browse to https://monitoredserver:2381 do you get the SMH of the server being monitored?

by the way in the task you set up to automatically e-mail you , i notice you have forward snmp trap set to the hp sim server address, hp sim should have already received a trap which generates an event which this task will pick up and do it's actions (i.e e-mail etc) . you would usually use the forward snmp trap to pass on the trap to another piece of management software such as openview/tivoli/help desk etc.

in fact that snmp forward to itself could result in a self perpetuating loop , i can't remember how clever hp sim is with regard to event aggregation, so i would remove that in your task.
