Is the version of MSDE that is running...
Did it come with the 4.1 download or was it already in place?
If it did come with the download, what are you using for the authentication credentials prompt, as well as the Database Server name field?
Ed

Has anyone come up with a solution for the "Could not connect to specified database server" error when installing SIM 4.1? I am at a standstill until I can get SIM to recognize my instance of MSDE that is running.

This is the version that came with 4.1.

The MSDE instance is installed locally. At the prompt I am entering the same domain credentials used to logon to the server when I installed MSDE. I am also using the Fully Qualified Domain Name on the DataBase Server line.

I just installed 4.1 yesterday but I didn't use the FQDN for the server name. Just the name itself. However you probably already tried that...
I will also assume the box has been bounced since you installed MSDE?
