In IM7 you were able to force devices to take names other than what was provided by DNS, using the "Manual Discovery", "Edit Device." Can anyone tell me where this feature has moved to in SIM?

The closest thing would be to create a local hosts file.

David I have tried using SIM to create a hosts file. I create the hosts file called default by selecting the initialize contents with systems loaded from the central management server, sorted by name. I then find the device I want to change and modify the name portions. How do I get these changes to take effect? The device still shows up by its original name.

Since the OS does the name resolution, you have to give it to the OS. In HP-UX or Linux it is the file /etc/hosts in Windows find the file \%WINDIR%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. After editing the file as you want it, delete the systems and rediscover.

David these particular servers that I have this problem with are located in the DMZ. They are our external web servers.

Example:
I have server BEPC01, SIM discovers it as OWA, because this server is used for external access to E-mail. If I change the local host file will it in anyway affect external web access?
