Sim help

Okay, am new to SIM.

I have just installed the current version. What should i be looking to do once the product is installed?

Should i run a discovery? if i discover the entire network is this just static data in the DB or does monitoring enable automatically?

Reason i ask is we have a 3rd party tool called NetIQ monitoring our servers and rather then monitoring the Blade enclosure via the MIBS i though installing SIM may help.

any help apriciated.

The first time wizard and the SIM main page should lead you trough the next steps.

SIM will also use the SNMP MIB's or WBEM to collect the system status. If you discover the entire network you will see all your IP accessable device inside SIM.
But you can configure SIM that he only discovers the devices you like to see.
Options->Discovery->Configure Global Settings -> Discovery Filter

The big advantage over a 3rd party solution you will get if you use SIM together with Insight Remote Support Advance IRSA.

Perhaps you should explain your monitoring or system management main goals.

It does depend on what you're trying to do and how big the site is.
HPSIM can be linked into Blade enclosures, so you can jump straight to the OA from SIM.
Agents installed on the servers can send traps to HPSIM fo HW predictive failures etc.

If your site is mainly HP Servers, Blade enclosures etc. you'll get a lot of benefit from the integration of HPSIM.
