Cannot install HP agents on VMware 4.00

I have done this very often but this is failing
It is a proliant DL360 G6
Vmwware 4.0.0
Installing hpmgmt-8.4.0-vmware4x.tgz
The installtion runs find but the agents do not start and the bullentine is uninstalled
The hpmgmtlog ends with

HP Insight Manager agents have been configured
however an operation falure has been detected
cAGENT_OPERATION value [ 1 ]

Exit 50

Installation:
Login as the system administrator (i.e., root), download the HP Insight Management Agents package to a directory on the hard drive. Navigate to that directory and unpack the contents of the package by typing:

â ¢tar -zxvf hpmgmt-8.6.0-vmware4x.tgz
This will create two new directories (./hpmgmt and ./hpmgmt/860) under the current directory. Navigate to the ./hpmgmt/860 directory and view the README file for installation instructions.

It is required that the virtual machines (VM) on the ESX host be in either powered off or suspend state due to the installation/uninstallation scripts will put the ESX host into maintenance mode to be able to install/uninstall the agents.

If during installation/uninstallation, there is the detection of an active VM (i.e., the state of the VM is not either suspend or power off), a message is posted to the screen and the installation/uninstallation will terminate. The user must determine what to do with the detected VM. Once the user has either moved the VM off the ESX host or placed the VM in powered off or suspend state. the user can go ahead and run the installation/uninstallation of the Management Agents.

I am aware of 8.6. i was using 8.4 to avoid the maintenance mode.
Iv'e used 8.4 dozens of times before without a problem. in fact i installed it on the exact smae configuration which is a twin to the one I'm having trouble with.
I'ld like to knwo why it failed if possible.
I don't want to distrupt the users for 8.6 and have the same failure.

Hi Mathew,

I understand the reason for keeping 8.4.

It's very difficult to findout the failure reason by just looking at the error message. we may have to check the installation log (HP Management Agents cma.log file)

Since, you have installed it many times with sucessfull result, you might have checked the pre-requisites. hope SNMP service has been restarted before attempting this installation.

other option that you have is HP SIM software. IF you have HP SIM configure in your network and this system is part of the same network, you can deploy agents from HP SIM using repair agent task which will automatically check and configure the required setting for this installation.

Anyone else has something to add..? or faced the similar issue please advice.

The problem appears that the hp-snmp-agents will not start.
i have not found a log that tell me why the agents fail to start.
Does anyone know where i can look for that?

The SNMP is starting fine. The agents do not and the bulletin unintstalls
