SW shows a status of "?" but VC works just fine

Hello All,

In SIM I have a server that is working fine with the HW and SW agents. But, the SW shows a "?" in the SW field for this server. If I click on the "?" it brings me right into the VC agent and displays the software info. Can anyone tell me why this is happening?

If you move your cursor over the ? it should display the reason for the ?

The Software Status Update task that reads the information from the Version Control Agent into the database by default runs once a week. Trigger it to run and see if the ?s still appear.

Logs --> All Scheduled Tasks --> SW status update --> [Run now]

hi!

i basically have seen the same ting on my side. i already scheduled it to run daily but i have servers where i know that everything is ok and i also see the "?". and i know that after the initial installation it was was green!!!

what could cause this?

How long has HpSIM been running, what version and OS is you CMS and what OS is your Managed Servers?

Also verify that your SNMP properties are correct on both the managed server and the CMS have the same r-w community string and the CMS ip address is listed in the security settings.

I'm having the same problem. The CMS is W2K, fully patched with the latest support packs in the repository. Two days ago, my servers were either Green or Yellow (haven't updated all of them yet). Today, all '?'. Reinstalled, rebooted. Now, none of my managed servers can even "see" the VCR so I cannot even reset it. Error says the account or password is invalid . . .which it is not. I've double-triple checked all settings. This is becoming frustrating, to say the least.
Any other ideas greatly appreciated!

Hi Kelley,

You say all ?, is that under all the colums (hw,mp,sw,pf)?

You installed patches are you using DHCP and possibly the ip changed upon reboot?

Also you say you re-installed - did you uninstall then re-install HpSIM? I wouldn't think this is necessary.

Just off the bat it sounds like something you would see with using DHCP.

I have had Insight 4.1 running since its release. I started with a freash install and all SNMP setting s are correct. The host is running Win 2k pro and all the servers are Win2k Server and Advanced server.
The agents and the VCRM are all up to the latest release.

Jim,
Only the SW is ?
We do not us DHCP, strictly IP.
Reinstalled the VCA and VCRM on host.

On the systems I've updated with the latest PSP (7.10a), they are also showing '?' under SW, whereas b/4 they were Green.

I agree it seems like a DHCP problem when you first look at it, that's why I'm stumped!

Now, get this, the servers that could not "see" the VCRM last week, can now see it! I get no errors when I set the VCA on the servers like I did previously. In fact, they are all set correctly anyway. Either showing yellow or green when I check the VCA's on the servers, b/4 they were all Blue. Question marks still showing under the SW, but I'm running a software poll right now so we'll see how that turns out.

From where you upgrade software. From CD or from Repository. Are you have pre-configured component Web Agent, Survey and HTTP Server in Repository with your password, Trust options .....

What hapen's if you on one server wich don't show SW status corectly, re-enter server name with VCRM, password, reference supportpack. And then run Sowftware Status Polling Task.

This happens to approx 10 of our servers - Have manually set VCA settings to point to CMS w/correct password, it saves it fine but the next day the CMS shows VC Agent Not Configured. When accessing the VCA the settings are all the same as previously. Been trying to find a solution to this for a few weeks now..

Seems to be that when the Software Status poll runs the affected servers lose their VCA configuration so during the day it shows up as the blue "?" with the status: Unknown - VC Agent not configured.
Clicking on the "?" to access the VCA then going through the configuration again without changing anything and running the software status poll seems to fix it, but the next day it's the same.

Well, sounds to me like at the moment you have SW status set to run, the VCRM is not reachable for some reason for these servers, or perhaps not responding properly.

I have seen instances where VCRM stops responding properly and the VCRM service needs to be restarted to get SW status back to green. The problem seems to have gone away with VCRM/VCA 2.0.7.10

Ditto Frank's post. I have seen this as well, but not since I started using the last VCRM.

If the latest is being used. I have also seen resource issues on the server with the VCRM on it create similar conditions especially when the VCRM is on CMS with a local database. I would check the performance logs in this case.

We have the VCRM (upgraded as of yesterday to latest version) running from the CMS. Could try moving the repository to another server?
