David:

When the browser first starts accessing HP SIM one of the first things SIM sends it is a small Java applet as a test. If the result code from that test is an error, the browser will inform you that a suitable Java plug-in is not available and stop you there. There's no point in letting you go on, because if the test Java applet fails, your experience in HP SIM would be pretty dismal. :)

With this in mind (and the fact you can use it with Firefox), I would start looking at security settings or anything else that would prevent IE from successfully running a small Java applet.
When opening insight manager 4.2 with I.E6, I get the following error:

A suitable Java Plug-In (JPI) was not detected on this system. HP Systems Insight Manager requires JPI
1.4.1 or later to be installed. You will not be able to log in until a suitable JPI is detected.

Click "Install JPI" to allow Systems Insight Manager to install the JPI.
When prompted on file download, select "Open" instead of "Save". If prompted for the
program to open the file with, choose "explorer.exe" from your Windows® directory.

1: Present Java version running is 1.4.1_05, I have tried removing and installing version 1.4.2_06 (Still get the same error, reverted back to 1.4.1_05)

2: I have deslected the Java (sun) tab within I.E

3: Environment variables details seem ok:
Environment name: Java_Home
Variable Value: Reflects the install path

4: From the command prompt: Java -version displays the correct version

5: I can use insight via firefox, but need to use I.E

Any ideas

Thanks

Dav

Open the Java plugin in Control panel. Select Internet Explorer. In the advanced Tab, try changing the options like "Use Java plugin Default", or "JRE 1...."
You may have to experiment with that. Also see the screenshot that I have attached. Hope it works for you!..

Cheers,
Hari

I had the same Problem. I found a solution in another thread.
Check your c:\Program Files\HP\Systems Insight Manager\config\globalsettings.props.
Mine was corrupt and ends with /u/U/U/U/UU or something like this. After replacing, everything works fine.

I investigated the solution suggested by Thomas regarding the "globalsettings.props" and found that although it didnt look corrupted (ie no weird characters), when I compared it to a our test system it was significantly shorter and did not have any references to the java platform. Luckily our backups work so I restored the file from a few weeks back, reinstalled java again when requested and voila, it all started to work again. For reference my file was approx 6KB in size.
