Hi Harry,

SNMP community names (write and read) can be whatever you want it to be (I am sure there are character and length restrictions, but you know what I mean).

You just have to make sure both "parties" use the same name. For example, if you pick "Packers" as your Write string name, make sure the clients and the SIM server are both set to use "Packers".

This make sense? If not, let us know.
Thanks
Nelson

Hi all. This is astupid question I am sure, however under the global protocol settings, should the 'Default write community string' be the CMS name? This is what I currently have and want to make sure.
Thank you.

Hi Nelson,

I do understand your reply, but I haven't come across anywhere were I need the settings to be the same. i.e. When installing the initial support pack. I setup the managed system with a new 'community name' of say '123' under the SNMP Service for Security and traps. THis is read/write.

Now on the CMS, under Global protocol, I have the 'CMS name' in the defualt write community and '123' in the read community.

What I am getting at is I don't have the 'CMS name' anywhere else. As I have set '123' as read/write on the managed system, should I have '123' under the CMS for both read and write?

I hope I make sense. Thanks again.

. Is the community name also '123'

HP SIM in fact does not use an SNMP write string for anything. Any 'write' operations that are performed are done over secure HTTP.

At the managed device, write strings are used to communicate among the agents locally. That means that an SNMP write string never needs to traverse the wire.
