Mark,

Thanks for the info. I take it that when you refer to 'Status Polling and variety of protocols' this is configurable...and is not limited to ICMP.

For example it is possible you may not configure the Status Poll to use ICMP but instead WMI. Or is ICMP always 'turned on' so to speak??

Thanks in advance

Simon
I wonder if you could answer me a simple question.

In Network Node Manager, it checks periodically, the status of servers by ICMP. I wanted to know if SIM has a similiar mechnism, using ICMP.

So my question is does SIM ICMP poll its known servers for 'are you alive' status or does it communicate with the SIM agent deployed using 'heartbeat', in a similar way to OVO??

I guess its possible it uses both but I'd just like to know about ICMP capability.

And if it does use the ICMP mechnism is this a configurable parameter. For example can you configure it 1m/5m etc etc.

Points given for answer and quick responses.

Thanks in advance

Simon

simon,

hp sim uses a default task called hardware status polling, which uses a variety of protocols (icmp, snmp, wmi, dmi) to communicate with entities it knows about , this task is configurable to run every n mins (default is 5), icmp specific settings are timeout in secs and retry limit.

hope this helps

good luck

simon,

i think it uses all of them gathering information as it goes, so in hp sim there will be a number of status headings for each system
for hardware, software status etc in the overall system display. when you drilldown on each system, depending on what is enabled on it snmp, agent etc will govern how much info hp sim
can give, provide links or reports about.

hope that helps

good luck

simon,

missed out a bit - yes you can disable wbem and snmp.
