Hello, recently the cimnotify service fails with the following info:

"Event Type: Error
Event Source: CimNotify
Event Category: (1)
Event ID: 3
Date: 3/21/2005
Time: 2:15:34 PM
User: N/A
Computer: %computername%
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 3 ) in Source ( CimNotify ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: ."

I've seen older threads that reference an Event ID (4). I am running SIM 4.1 with SP1. Build C.04.01.00.01. Thank you for any help with this issue.

If the SMTP host is incorrect (has changed for example) the CIMnotify service would not start. Check in the registry under:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CIMnotify\Parameters\SmtpHost

And see value of the Key Name is reachable. Try and telnet to this host name on port 25. For example if the host name in this key is xyz.company.com see if you can reach it like this:

telnet xyz.company.com

If you get no connection check this is why CIMnotify service is NOT starting.

MJ

I am getting a similar error message. You said that the service can be turned off. Is the service name CIMNotify or something else.

Because it is not under HP Insight Manager service. Nor in CIMNotify so trying to figure out what is the name of the service.

thanks and I appreciate your response.

I know this thread is quite old now, but for completeness the service CIMnotify is HP Insight Event Notifier. Here are 3 things that I have found that will resolve the issue of the HomePage not displaying:

1. In Internet Explorer go to Internet Options > Advanced > Security and make sure there is a tick in Use TLS 1.0. If there is not, select it, click OK close you browser and relaunch the HomePage

2. Restart the HP System Management Homepage service

3. Reinstall the Homepage

This package is installed when you install the PSP/SPP, i don't see a seperate installer and the service is disabled by default.

The package should be part of the Insight Management Agents. Once you configure the tool by starting C:\Windows\system32\CIMntfy\cimntfy.exe the service will start and the startup will change to automatic.

Hello again,

I just edited the post, you only seem to update the Management agent, that is without reboot or any other hickup on your server. Once you configured the EXE file does that work. Also look at the other post reply in this forum about SIm of agent emailing.

If you update the SNMP agent, you use the SNMP version of the dataprovider if you update the WBEM agent you use WBEM as a source. HP is in favour of the WBEM version but both are supported. Wbem only work on WIndows servers and later ESX versions. If you use Linux you can only use SNMP, most devices can only use SNMP (V1).

Using the SNMP agent you need to configure SNMP local and remote for the SIM server.

Ok, so in this case I can just focus to install the WBEM provider for each Proliant servers and no need to worry about configuring the SNMP at all ?

Thanks for the suggestion Andrew. after I manually install the WBEM provider in all of the servers, does the HP SIM can automatically scans the server within the particular subnet to report if there are any faults daily ?

Correct, the server will continue to run just fine, it's a monitoring tool nothing more, as long as you dont' pusch firmware or drivers you will not interrupt your services...

Once you configure WBEM you need to set subscriptions from SIM. SIm scans for changes but you will never get events from scans. Events are created when events are received. When you set subscription you tell your server where to send events to in case of errors like broken disks...

Yes you can run a repair job to you selected servers. To run this select the servers,go to Configure > Configure or Repair Agent frum the menu, in the first screen you can select any extra servers, click next and select Install WBEM / WMI Provider and next.On the next screen select Create subscription to WBEM events and if you don't want to use an admin account for discovery also select Configure a non-administrative account for HP SIM to access WMI data.

If you have older servers like DL 380 G4 or older install an older WBEM agent from menu option Deploy > Deploy Drivers, FIrmware and Agents > INstall Software and firmware and select an older WBEM agent from an older PSP baselines if you uploaded this older PSP.
