Upgrading the HP SIM 5.3 - Need Recommendation

Hi Everybody,

Due to the end of the support of the Windows 2003 Server, I need to migrate migrate my current HP SIM 5.3.
Below is the current environment :

- Windows Server 2003 Std Ed (installed on a VM)

- Current HP SIM 5.3

- MSSQL 2005

I was told to migrate the above to the following spec.:

- Windows Server 2012 R2 Std Ed (Will be installed on a VM too)

The configuration set up on the Windows 2003 must be kept.

My questions are :

1) what is the best version to upgrade from HP SIM 5.3 ?

2) For an upgrade, should I first install the HP SIM 5.3 on the new server and then upgrade ?

3) Regarding my question 2), somebody knows if there is a link that indicate how to migrate from 2003 to 2012 ?

(Step-by-Step procedure or an installation guide ?)

The question you ask has been asked a lot of times. So you could try the search option from within the forum. But if i where you i would install a clean 7.4 SIM version. This could be installed on a Windows 2012 R2 server on either hardware or on a virtual server. Depending on the number of objects you can install a local lightweight SQL together with the SKM installation. If you need a faster solution you should install or use an external SQL due to the high disk IO.

With a clean setup next to the existing old SIM server youcan take your time and plan the migration. You can use the old server to replicate trusts for thr new server and you can easily export your objects from the old setup and import them into thr new server exporting can be done with mxexport -ln > c:\export.txt to dump all objects or either with reports of collections of windows, linux, ESX or onboard admins depending on your enviroment and needs.

Sorry to reply on this post but I am completely new on HP SIM and I would like to know if the mxexport command could work with the HP 5.3 ?

Is there a migration tools for this HP SIM version ?

The only path i can think of is a step by step update but i'm not sure if you should update SIM on an OS tha't probably WIndows 2003 ? What is the installed OS and SQL (buildin or seperate install)?

Hi Andrew,

The current build is the following :

it is a built-in. Not separated.

So you need steps for a new Windows 2008 or higher SIM setup and then an export from the old server and an import to the new server?
