Hello,

I have a question, when I manually discover servers by typing their hostname in the manual discovery job, but one of the servers is discovered by IP-address while the others are shown by hostname.
I have checked a few of the servers for diffrences but to me they look the same.
Why is one server returned by ip-address and the other by hostname?

Regards,

Aad

Mark,

Thanks for youre reply.
Yes I have checked the DNS entries for all servers, and they are all equal. Just like the SNMP settings and informational settings in the OS like hostname.
In SIM I have changed the information of the server, so for now it is represented and found by hostname, but to me it is still a question why the IP-number is resolved.

Regards,
Aad

You can't just check the entries in DNS, you need to check forward and reverse resolution from your HP SIM central management server. The only way that HP SIM can resolve names is through DNS.

can i bypass the cross check? it was working fine with just forward lookup. We have multiple AD domains. because of this i dont think getting reverse lookups to work will be an option.

City Blue, I would imagine that's happening because SIM has discovered the Onboard Administrator on the C7000 and is getting the blade information from it, not from the servers themselves. You might want to make sure that the IP ranges for the blades and their iLOs is included in your Discovery settings and manually start a Discovery to see if SIM will discover them properly.

Well, I can't swear that your situation is exactly what I'm picturing, but the OA on the C7000 sees the blades as their serial number IF the iLOs on them aren't configured with the server name. On the iLO, you would find that field in: Administration...Access...Options. I'm pretty sure that the OA relies upon the iLO to get the details on the blades.

Great tip on checking resolution from the SIM server itself. I ran out of options and said to myself "I can resolve from my workstation and it's the same DNS records (different server) as the SIM server is using" but why not. Sure thing, the reverse wasn't resolving at the SIM server. The reverse record was missing from the DNS server that the SIM was pointing to as it wasn't replicating properly with the other servers.
