Hi there,

does anyone know how I can get the Netservers to page me via insight manager. I get paged for proliant servers if there is a hardware issue but I don't get paged by netserver if I pull out a drive or reboot it to test it. I have top tools running on it. i get paged for node up/down for some netservers but not all.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

thanks
Sach

If you have not reviewed the following short document, I do recommend starting with this.
"Guide to interoperability of hp hardware and hardware management tools: hp Toptools 5.6 with ProLiant servers and Insight Manager 7 with hp Netserver systems white paper"

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/bpt01108/bpt01108.pdf

The agents available from HP for the Netserver are Toptool agents. There are no HP Netserver agents specifically for IM or SIM. Agents are needed to monitor the hardware and communicate with the management software. This involves SNMP traps with MIBS for the devices.

Hi,

i read the guide: "Guide to interoperability of hp hardware and hardware management tools: hp Toptools 5.6 with ProLiant servers and Insight Manager 7 with hp Netserver systems white paper"
but my problem is still not solved.
I installed TopTools 5.55 with TT Agents 5.55 on LH4 (w2k SP 4 [SNMP is also configured]). I can discover this devices and get a status. But if there is a hardware problem, i don't get any information. The hw status in the SIM 4.1 SP1 is always green. (My Proliant server work fine). What do i need to do to get information about the hw?

Thanks for the help.

Regards,
Nemanja

Do you get any events from the Netserver in the hp Systems Insight Manager Events tab for that device?

If not, then that is likely an SNMP problem on that device. Blocked ports, no SNMP trap destinations, not accepting packets to/from the Insight Manager server, etc. can cause such issues.

If the events are being recorded, then the Automatic Event Handler will need to be verified. There is a event category called HP Netserver Events that the Automatic Event Handler can check for. It may not be appropriate to check for just "minor" and "major" events, as the hp Systems Insight Manager MIB definitions may not classify events that Toptools define as "major" as "major" in hp SIM.
Hi Jon,

thanks for the reply.

Do you mean the hw status tab? (i upload a picure - do you mean that what i marked with the red rectangle?) This status is always green. If i look in a Systems Page from a Netserver i get information from SNMP; from DMI Agent and from ping. The problem is, the status from Toptools won't be forwarded to HP SIM status.

I configured the SNMP. Maybe i forget something. What do i need?
Blocked ports? I don't think so, because i've got also Proliant Servers in the subnet.

I tried to configure the Automatic Event Handler. Do you mean under "Select events" to select HP Netservers?

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Nemanja

No, what I mean by the events tab is the list of events associated with that device. Click on the server name. The events tab is the third tab from the left. These are the events that the Automatic Event Handler shifts through when deciding to page or email a notification.

The "Event Type" column includes a short description of the event. If you goto the Automatic Event Handler screen via Options -> Events -> Automatic Event Handling -> Manage Tasks, edit or create a new one, then hit next to reach the Select Events page. If you change the "where" field from "severity" to "event category", you get the chance to change the event category drop down list to Netserver Events. That allows you in turn to use the "and type name is" field, which shows the Netserver events that are available for notification. Most of them are RAID and memory errors.

To check the severity level of these events (informational vs. minor vs. major), goto Options -> Events -> SNMP Trap Settings. The top drop down list allows you to select a specific MIB, or error definition file that defines the events. hp Systems Insight Manager will tell you if trap handling is enabled (that is, if hp SIM will accept this event into it's database) and the severity level, which is what SIM uses to determine if the trap is considered informational, minor, major, etc. A list of MIBs is listed at http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/bpt01108/bpt01108.pdf , page 6. Some of them are turned off. Please read this document before turning on or off the trap handling of these MIBs.
Hi Jon,

thank you for the interesting information!
Now i understand it better.
But i have again some questions:

Under the events tab i have all my traps. That looks fine.
In the Automatic Event Handler i see all the events for the Netservers. But do i need to configure their that the hw status for Netserver in the overview change? Or do i need to set the severities for the mibs? Or is there no possibility to see the new hw status for Netservers?

Do you know what i mean?

The next step is to set the severities. I only need major if a disk failure, fan failure, cpu failure, controller failure or power supply failure. The rest is uninteressing for us.
Which mibs do i need to configure?

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Nemanja

I am sorry. I no longer have a lot of information regarding Netservers as it pertains to Insight Manager. It may be best to direct the MIB information to Netserver support and the "How is hp Systems Insight Manager impacted" questions to Insight Manager support.

It is possible to submit cases through the internet using the Support Case Manager, available from ITRC and the Small and Medium Business Center.

If you have hardware contract, goto
http://www1.itrc.hp.com/service/mcm/homepageRequest.do to log a case.

If you have warranty remaining, goto http://itrc.hp.com/service/mcm/countrySelection.do
