Hi Thomas, you referenced page 284 in the HP SIM Admin Guide. I can't find this guide anywhere, the only documentation I have is the Installation and user guide and it is only 97 pages. Is this a book that I need to purchase? Maybe If I get the correct literature I wont have to be asking you all soo many questions. lol

Thanks

JEff

You only need to install openSSH on the CMS. It is not required on any of the monitored nodes.

Really cool. so basically all I need to do to fully monitor a server is to set the snmp trap community string and enter the IP address of the SIM server. Then run discovery to the server? Is that basically it?

Thanks

JEff

Yes, you need to configure the read SNMP community in SIM to match the read community on the servers you wish to monitor and insure that the SNMP service on those servers is set to accept packets from any host or if set to accept packets from these hosts that the SIM server is listed. SIM should then be able to retrieve all the server information via SNMP.

Joel, thanks alot.. I think I have the community string working properly.. so let me ask you, Why is there a 2 page installation on "Setting up Windows Managed Systems" that only talks about installing and configuring SSH. What am I losing by not installing it? Dont get me wrong without installing this It will save me soooo much time.

Thanks

JEff

To take advantage of "single login" and "secure task execution" (replication of agent settings, installation of software and firmware) you will need to install OpenSSH on each managed node. This will require a system reload and the copying of a certificate from the CMS, not a small task. This allows the true management of the systems and the ability to schedule the deployment of software, firmware etc.
Take a look at page 348 onwards in the HP SIM Admin Guide.

Thanks Thomas that makes sence..I think I will make that a phase two project. Right now I just want to get my 90 server monitored and identified.. I am really fighting the managed and unmanaged types.. I have so many that are coming up unmanaged.. and my community strings are correct.. Do I need to set the trap destination. I know I need to set Allow from the SIM server.
Any thought or tips for helping get better managed systems

Thanks

Jeff

You probably mean the Help Guide. It is available in PDF format at http://h18013.www1.hp.com/products/servers/management/hpsim/infolibrary.html. It is also available within hp Systems Insight Manager itself by hitting the question mark on a number of pages.
