you can do go to a command prompt and type nslookup.

It will grab your default DNS Server.

Type the name and it should resolve to the ip. If you type the IP it should resolve to the name. If the IP does not resolve the reverse is not working.

Why would five of my 30 servers show the IP address, and NOT the DNS?

(SIM 4.2)

I am using a HOSTS file with

IP Name

The first five servers are not showing up with their DNS name, only their IP name in the "Systems" view.

These five are all on the same subnet as my SIM server. But I have other servers on the same subnet that do show their DNS name....

Could it be a reverse DNS issue? How do I check that?
Or something else?

When I had them showing up as IP only, i went into my DNS server and made sure the forward and reverse where in there for the name.

HPSIM uses DNS for name resolution, not netbios.

You can also edit the server name within SIM4.2.

-Click on the IP address
-Select the "Links" tab on the System Page
-Select "Edit System Properties" option under HP Systems Insight Manager pages
-Change the IP address to server name in the "Preferred system name" box.
-Select OK.

You might need to issue some SNMP test traps from that managed server, just to be sure your SIM4.2 server still recognize that server.
