Implementation of Commvault with HPE StoreOnce cataylst

Planning to implement Commvault with HPE StoreOnce 3660 cataylst, please advise the best Practice for the configuration level.

- For the configuration of cataylst store will use only one cataylst or multiple cataylst to use the backup target (like multiple mount paths).

- Is it will configure synthetic full (or) full + Incremental will support storeonce.

- Any additional level of configuration for Immutability.

Please find my response in-line:

For the configuration of cataylst store will use only one cataylst or multiple cataylst to use the backup target (like multiple mount paths).

It is a trade-off between storage efficiency and convenience when you are deciding between one or multiple catalyst stores.
Advantage of single catalyst store:
You can achieve better duduplication ratio and hence better storage efficiency.

Disadvantages are:
> Backup performance will be slower due to tedious deduplication.
> Housekeeping performance will be slower
> Inconvenience while configuring replication, changing backup policy or any administrative changes.

Best practice is to store the similar type of data in a catalyst store and have different stores for different types of data. That way you can achieve batter deduplication without compromising the performance.

StoreOnce supports them all.

Any additional level of configuration for Immutability.
Basically no configuration is required on StoreOnce if you are setting up immutability from CommVault. Immutability can be set on StoreOnce as well. If the 'server controlled Immutability' is set for certain period in StoreOnce, CommVault can't delete or modify the backup items within the StoreOnce's immutable period.

- If we will enable server controlled data immutability that means will manage from commvault end.

- As per the HPE storeonce cataylst with commvault integration is mentioned to disable dedup, compression and encryption features disable from commvault end. In this case the encryption feature is default enabled on store level.

Just want to understand of ISV Controlled Data Immutability settings from storeonce.
As Server Controlled Immutability is for backup applications like CommVault, Veeam etc, ISV controlled Immutability is for ISVs (Idependent Software Vendors) like Salesforce, ServiceNow, SAP, Oracle etc. Though these aren't backup applications, they are capable of creating backups for themselves. The functionality will be comparable to how iOS creates backpups in iCloud or how whatsap creates its own backup in Google drive.

The difference is ISV offers flexibility in defining the immutable period for each item. Server Controlled Data Immutability maintains the same immutability period for all items.

Is it the retention days from storeonce appliance and commvault retention days is same or which one will apply here to remove the data.
Retention you set in CommVault and StoreOnce may not be same. The retention you set from the CommVault will hold good. Ex: If you set Immutability in StoreOnce for 3 days, retention from CommVault for 7 days - you can't delete the backups for 3 days, if you want you can delete the backup between 3-7 days, backups will be automatically deleted after 7 days from CommVault.

Yes. But the only restriction is you can't delete the backups from CommVault within the immutable period. This feature works as an additional security for the backup items.

Yes. You can disable dedupe, compression and encryption from CommVault. All the backup data will go through deduplication and compression while storing on StoreOnce.
However, encryption is an optional feature that requires license.
