Hi,

We are in process to upgrade the Memory in BL 460c. Currently we are having 4 GB Memory in the server which is working fine.
We need to upgrade the memory with additional 8GB*2. But after installing additional memory we are getting various errors with the OS.

Either the OS is not booting properly / Its taking long time to boot and anyhow it is booted its not working properly. Giving various errors like “rundll32” etc.

Currently the pairing combination of memory is as follows.

512MB*4 >> Slots 1/2/3/4
1GB*2 >> Slots 5/7

This configuration is working fine.

I tried to install additional 8GB*2 Memory in slots 6 & 8.

Also tried the configuration provided by HP as follows.

Memory Slot
1A 2C 3A 4C 5B 6D 7B 8D
Standard 512 MB 1 GB 512 MB 1 GB 512 MB 8GB 512 MB 8G

These configurations are not working properly.

We have tried with only 8GB*2 memory. It is also giving errors with the OS.

We are in process to upgrade memory on two of the HP BL460c servers. On both the servers we have tried above steps. No Go.
Hi,

Do you have the HP product numbers of the 2x8GB DIMMs? HP retail? What manufacturer?

413015-B21 is the 2x8GB option number that hp supports according to the quickspecs.

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12518_div/12518_div.html#Memory

- When you put only the 8GB DIMMs in, was that in the two A Slots?
- Have you checked if a BIOS upgrade might be necessary to support this or improve this functionality?

The 8GBx2 Memory is HP Genuine Spare.
P/N: 413015-B21

Installed only 2 Nos. 8GB RAMs. Still same problem.

BIOS is already update with version 04/26/2010.

HP has recommended version. 2010.10.25 (7 Dec 2010)

OK, well that's good :)

So there is a newer firmware out than the one you have installed.

The release notes

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=0&prodSeriesId=1842750&swItem=MTX-dff61d0700eb4355923e19fb80&prodNameId=3288156&swEnvOID=4064&swLang=8&mode=5

does not mention any enhancements/relating to memory..

--

Would you be able to put the 8x2 GB DIMMs in and run a memory test? Like with memtest86? Or the HP smartstart diagnostics CD?

Thanks for reply!!!

Actually when 8GBx2 Memory modules are installed, (with or without existing memory)
the OS Windows Server 2003 is becoming unstable. Its not booting properly. Also if booted after waiting for a long time, its behaving erratically throwing a lots of errors like rundll32.exe etc. Sometimes "Notepad" is also not opening.

After removing the 8GB memory modules Windows will run properly.

Also PAE is enabled for the server.

I have checked in two servers. Same errors.

I want to upgrade the existing memory i.e. 4GB with additional 16GB. i.e. 8GBx2.

I have 8Nos of 8GB DIMMs. For all its giving same errors. This means there is no problem with DIMMs.
