Thats true, with 2.4, racks can be created only when the enclosure is seen in HP BladeSystem Tree view.

Did you try the https part? Is the OA System type still seen as Unknown?

I have a new SIM 5.1 install and updated the BladeSystem Integrated Manager to 2.4 and our c7000 chassis firmware to 1.3. SIM does discover the individual blade management processors and the onboard administrator; however nothing is listed beneath the All c-class Racks branch in the tree.

When I select the onboard administrator from All Systems, all system status and properties look correct except the System Type is Unknown. Does that and the subtype need to be set manually for proper administration?

I'm also having the same problem OA 1.30 and Integrated Manager 2.4. It appears the automatic discovery is no longer possible per the note below on the download page for the Integrated Manager... "With upgrade to HP BladeSystem Integrated Manager 2.4, user will be able to add enclosures to a rack and edit created racks. The racks will not be automatically created during discovery. User will be able to add enclosures (c-class/p-class/e-class) to a rack from the enclosure view."

Reference:
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/26957.html
===============================
Does anyone have a tip on adding the rack or enclosure manually in SIM and discovering the OA system type?

I, painfully, spent a great deal of time with phone support and was handed off to an escallation engineer. We'll be troubleshooting via webex in the next day or so. I'll let you know how it goes in case we determine a fix.

I am having the same issue. However, I did go into the OA on the enclosure and make sure that it had the correct settings for the SIM server and SNMP was configured propoerly.

The other thing I noticed is that the Blades in the enclosure show their monitoring status of disabled.

With HP BladeSystem Integrated Manger 2.4(a), user can create his/her own rack. Once the enclosure is properly identified,"add to encl" link will be seen in the enclosure view.Click on the link.

The rest is pretty much self explainable.

No, the system type is set by SIM on discovery. Sometimes when the https/http query is not respoding, the Onbroad Administrator can be seen as Unknown.Log into OA(telnet) and type "enable https" and re-identify the OA.

Can you try one these

1) In SIM, GO to options->Protocol Settings->Global protocol settings-> (if https is already checked) , uncheck and check it back.
APPLY

2) In your browser type the following

http://<OA ip="">/xmldata?item=all
if this gives a xml reply(which is pretty leghty)

Re-identify the OA. It worked when we tried here. Can you please verify if this solves your problem?

</OA>

Problem solved, thanks to an escallation engineer. The issue was that somewhere in the configuration, an invalid character killed the processing of XML used during the identification process. In my instance, an ampersand (&) was in the display text of the enclosure lcd.

Apparently, a recent firmware update prohibits this character during input validation, but since our enclosure was originally configured a while ago, this was not in place. Removal of the character immediately allowed identification to succeed and has everything looking just as we would have expected.

I issued the command https://<OA address="">/xmldata?item=all to retrieve the XML data from the c-Class OA. It reported a similar invalid character message as you experienced. HP field services replaced the system board weeks prior, though didn't enter the original system serial # into the RBSU, resulting in this XML error. We entered the correct serial # in the RBSU and we eliminated the following message, allowing us to discover the OA in SIM 5.1.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
XML page cannot be displayed
Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.
________________________________________
A semi colon character was expected.
