We are having problems with our VC SAN modules losing connection to our SAN. HP support suggested updating firmware. I tried the GUI from the VC manager web interface, but it fails with a generic error. HP support suggested using the command line utility instead. This works, but only for the Ethernet modules; both SAN modules fail (tried twice). In the logs, I get this error:

004020 (1402) fw_update.c[4038] Firmware Update Status Summary
004020 (1402) fw_update.c[374] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
004020 (1402) fw_update.c[4089]
004020 (1402) fw_update.c[4090] The following modules were updated successfully:
004020 (1402) fw_update.c[4096] Bay 1 : HP 1/10Gb VC-Enet Module : 1.34 2008-12-12T04:43:24Z
004020 (1402) fw_update.c[4096] Bay 2 : HP 1/10Gb VC-Enet Module : 1.34 2008-12-12T04:43:24Z
004020 (1402) fw_update.c[4136]
004020 (1402) fw_update.c[4137] The following modules were not successful:
004020 (1402) fw_update.c[4143] Bay 3 : HP 4Gb VC-FC Module : Firmware update failed
004020 (1402) fw_update.c[4143] Bay 4 : HP 4Gb VC-FC Module : Firmware update failed
004020 (1402) fw_update.c[4196]
004020 (1402) fw_update.c[374] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
004020 (1402) fw_update.c[2352] vc_update_firmware_all failed
004020 (1402) fw_update.c[2353] Firmware update failed on one or more modules
004020 (1402) fw_update.c[2360]
004020 (1402) fw_update.c[2367] Total execution time: 00:21:22
004020 (1405) oawrap.c[485] User successfully deleted.

Anybody have any ideas how to get the SAN modules to take the new firmware?

Thanks
Nelson

reboot fc modules --> try firmware update again. If it didn't help, remove FC modules from enclosure--> wait few minutes --> update fw again.

Is your OA FW and ILO FW in server blades up to date ?

Thanks for the answer.

Does restarting the VC cause any outage for the blades? I am assuming yes...

My firmware for the OA is 2.25 and the iLOs are all 1.61. HP told me not to update the OA to 2.32 because it is for the newer VC modules which I don't use (and something about an LDAP problem in that version). So basically I am exactly at the firmware levels HP support is recommending (except for the VCs).

My support engineer is on vacation, that is why I thought I would post something here to see if anyone had any ideas while I wait for HP to get back to me on this particular problem.

Thanks,
Nelson

You can reboot one FC module first --> wait until it's up again and reboot another. If You have reduntant SAN there should be no problems.

Thanks.

I do have redundant SAN modules, but what started this whole deal is that I have random blades lose connection to the SAN (even though the SAN shows full login on both sides). I have included a screen shot. As you can see, one of my servers shows "unknown" as the connection status (on only one of the SAN modules). QLogic SANsurfer also shows it disconnected as does the the ctrl-q setup utility when the server boots. So I am afraid I will lose that server if I shut down the module that IS working for it.

Nelson

I had to shut down the entire enclosure and power it back on. I ran the firmware update utility after the power on and this time it worked. I then powered on all blade servers.
