What I have found to work is that if you set Compatibility Mode to Always On. It will work.
Page > Compatibility View Settings > Display all websites in Compatibility View.

Windows 2008 R2 comes with IE8. All other versions are unsupported and to my understanding won't downgrade or install.

And now, just to add to the flame, if you build your interface to only work with one browser (IE ActiveX) then you should be responsible to keeping it up to date. Just the same as when the councle say's they are going to redo the road, you should check out the zoning plans. Microsoft did say they were making many changes and compatibility maybe an issue.
There are alternatives such as Java, HTML5/JS, and Flash. Which also allow for larger browser markets and reduced incompatibilty.

IE8 was officially released March 19th, 2009.

It hasn't even been 3 months yet. You make it sound like IE8 has been available for 6+ months and is the best Web Browser available.

Do you immediatelly install the latest available service pack to all of your windows hosts as soon as it becomes available?

Are you using the Integrated Console? or the Java Console on your blade server iLo's?

Steven
