Only One Windows iSCSI Initiator Can Connect to a Volume at a Time

Hello all, we have SQL HA group with 3 nodes. Each node has its own disks on a Nimble Storage. The SQL HA group requires a cluster. We have the cluster setup for a year with a quorum disk on the nimble. Everything has been working fine until 2 weeks ago when the cluster lost the quorum disk during a failover to patch the nodes. I tried to connect the nodes to the quorum volume again but I can connect only 1 node at a time to the quorum volume. Lets say after I connected node 1 to the quorum volume in iSCSI Initiator, I went to node 2 to connect to the quorum volume and got an error "Authentication Failure". If I disconnect the quorum volume from node 1 then I can connect node 2 to the quorum volume.

I don't know this is a problem with Nimble or the nodes. I am able to duplicate the problem using 2 different HP servers connecting to a new quorum disk on the nimble; only 1 node can connect at a time. The system logged an event ID 10 "Login request failed. The login response packet is given in the dump data."

Has anyone got this problem?

Hello @HTTH,

In your Nimble admin interface, edit the settings on your quorum volume. Look in the Access section for an "Allow multiple initiator access" checkbox. If you have this check box, make sure it's enabled.

Hello @SprinkleJames, I checked the box to allow multiple access and saved but when I open access again, the box is not checked. I have setup shared disks for clusters many times; never got into this problem. We have not changed anything on the Nimble storage since the day it went into production.

Now, that does seem odd. I suggest you contact Nimble Storage Support.

HPE support helped. It turned out the option "Allow multiple initiator access" must be set for the volume first; if it is not set there then we cannot set for the initiators.
