topic Upgrade questions in HPE SimpliVity

Need to upgrade hosts and vCenter versions. Will be my first time running an upgrade. 6 hosts in 2 clusters.

How long does each host take to do the auto-update generally? Gen10 HPE hardware.

Am I being overly cautious if I want to split the upgrades into vCenter and hosts separately? I know I'll need to open support cases both times this way, but I'm okay with that?

Appreciate any insights.

HI

you don't have to open support case I am not sure upgrade is covered by support.

any case follow the HPE OmniStack 4.2.0 for vSphere Upgrade Guide document it is very good.

Also all information for Simplivity is refrenced from this site

https://www.hpe.com/us/en/collaterals/collateral.a50005929enw.html

you can separate the upgrade process

1) upgrade only vcenter.

2) upgrade only OVC's

3) upgrade ESXI version and SPP.

if you have problems then open a support case.

Regards

Give a KUDO if this helps

The upgrade process is farily straight forward if you've done it a few times. Since you haven't completed an upgrade before, I suggest getting your partner vendor involved if you have (the company that sold/installed the system), or HPE Support if you have a contract. We can also help you here in an unofficial capacity.

I've completed many upgrades over the past 4 years for several of my customers and my take-aways are:

1. Check the Interoperability Guide. See the link above from giladzzz. The guide is your friend... learn and understand it.

2. There is a new upgrade tool that if used peroperly, tells you exactly the process you need to follow: https://storage-showcase.ext.hpe.com/hpe-simplivity-upgrade-planner

3. You may need to process several upgrade in order to get to your end goal, depending on your current running Omnistack version.

4. Splitting the upgrade up is perfectly acceptable. There are logical start and stop points. Obviously don't leave a cluster running with mixed versions (for not too long anyway).

If you want to continue to get assistance here, post the following: vCenter version (and build number), ESXi Version (and build number), Omnistack version (run svt-federation-show on one of the OVC's or check the cluster info from the plug-in within vCenter), the firmware/bios running on your hosts.

As for timing, keep these values in mind as I use them to estimate the upgrade timing for all of my customers:

1 hour for vCenter, 2h if upgrading from vCenter 6.x to 7.x

1 hour per host for firmware/hypervisor, per upgrade (sometimes you need multiple upgrades/jumps)

30m per host for Omnistack Virtual Controller (usually works out slightly less unless you run into issues)

15m for arbiter/plug-in upgrades

These values are based on manual upgrades. I haven't been in a situation where auto-updates actually work they way you want them to so I usually default to the manual upgrade process. Assuming auto-update works for you (also assuming you are referring to the SimpliVity Upgrade Manager completing all of the components of the upgrade), it should work out to a little less time then what is stated above.

Hope these notes help, fell free to ask more questions, or for more assistance.
