Is it possible to disable deduplication or compression features per datastore or virtual machine level ?

What would be best practices for vms that don't benefit from compression or deduplication ?

Hi Convergo,

We cannot disable deduplication and compression features on the datastore/VM level. It is enabled on the vSAN cluster level, which means once it is enabled it will be always enabled on all the VMs on the datastore in the cluster.

You may refer to the below document which has the details on disabling Deduplication and Compression features.
https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/6.7/com.vmware.vsphere.virtualsan.doc/GUID-5A01D0C3-8E6B-44A7-9B0C-5539698774CC.html

A few best practices for VMs where compression or deduplication is not enabled are as below:

1. Use the latest version of HPE SimpliVity firmware and software.
2. Create seperate datastore for each VMs.
3. Avoid creating too many datastores, as this can reduce the efficiency of the HPE SimpliVity cluster.
4. You can use the HPE SimpliVity Health Check tool to help you monitor your cluster to avoid outages.
5. Use Virtual Machine overrides to place Virtual Machines on the appropriate datastores.
6. Use snapshots and replicas for data protection to avoid deletion or corruption.
7. Use HPE SimpliVity RapidDR for disaster recovery.

For more details, you may refer the below documents:

https://www.vmware.com/content/dam/digitalmarketing/vmware/en/pdf/techpaper/performance/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-70-performance-best-practices.pdf
https://www.vmware.com/content/dam/digitalmarketing/vmware/en/pdf/products/vsan/vmware-horizon-7-on-vmware-vsan-best-practices.pdf

I hope this information is helpful.

Regards,
Sanika.
