Hello,

we got 2 brand new 5406Rzl Chassis with two J9827A Management Modules each and some 24p 1G RJ45 Ports and 8p 10G SFP+ Ports.

As I tried to configure the switch to VSF, cause of this will be the main router in our system I figured out, that somehow the second management modul is offline - and don't bring it online.
When pulling out the running one, I sometimes run into a state, where I can configure the new management module with the chassis as a new switch, without running vsf on it, waited several minutes.

If I initiate a reboot of the system only with the second module active, it boots into VSF, but, that's not what I wanted - we were promised to have full redundancy on the chassis and redundancy during the VSF.

This is how they were configured with the modules

Slot Module Description Serial Number Status Dump Ver
----- -------------------------------------- -------------- -------- ----- ---
1/MM1 HP J9827A Management Module 5400Rzl2 SGXXXXXXXX Active YES 1
1/MM2 HP J9827A Management Module 5400Rzl2 Offline YES 1

1/A HP J9987A 24p 10/100/1000BASE-T v3 ...

AFAIK VSF implementation on Aruba 5400R zl2 Switch series actually doesn't admit the second MM...so VSF and NonStop Switching or MM Warm Standby don't play well together: essentially the second MM should be disabled [*] (to Offline) or, better, definitely removed at all from the Chassis.

Let me group some references for you (there is a spcific guide explaining VSF requirements and restrictions in detail here, a dedicated Chapter on VSF also exists on relevant 5400R zl2 configuration guide: look for ArubaOS-Switch Management and Configuration Guide for KA/KB.16.03, Chapter 20 at page 526), just few examples:

here on Aruba AirHeads Community.

here on HPE Community.

[*] the ArubaOS-Switch MCG's statement on Chapter 20 basically tells you that:

Management module for the Aruba 5400R switch

The Aruba 5400R switch has two management module (MM) card slots available. Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends that you have only one MM for each Aruba 5400R switch when VSF is enabled. A second MM, if present, will be shutdown. Hewlett Packard Enterprise recommends that the second MM be removed from the chassis to prevent it accidentally becoming active.
