topic MSM760 DHCP Question in M and MSM Series

Here is an overview of what we are trying to implement:

First VSC on Corporate VLAN with Clients receiving IP addressing from DHCP server on LAN. This is currently working as expected with the controller configured as VSC relay.

Second VSC is for Guest Access. This is on a separate VLAN. We would like to use the controller itself as the DHCP server for the Guest VSC however I dont see the option to configure the VSC in this manner - it is looking for an external DHCP server. From memory i believe that this was possible with previous software versions but does not seem to be possible with the most recent version

Can someone confirm with me if this is correct or not - just so i can stop chasing a dead end!

Thanks

Joe

You have to set the controller globally to be DHCP server for it to appear on the VSC (its under controller->network or address allocation). Since the global setting also affects VSCs this means you cannot have one VSC doing relay and another beeing server.

Thats kind of what we had thought however we have been testing another scenario:

We have configured the Controller as a dhcp server with a dummy range and set it not to listen on LAN PORT but is set to listen on CLient Data Tunnel.

This allows the STAFF VSC to pull its addresses from our DHCP server - as the controller is not serving addresses by default on the LAN Port. Testing shows that we receive address from server and can access internet and LAN resouces.

The GUEST VSC has been configured with its own DHCP address range with its own gateway and DNS settings. The GUEST VSC is set to Egress on a different VLAN. We get an address from the controller in the correct range and we can hit the gateway - we can see the traffic getting to the gateway and going to the internet beyond however the traffic does not come back to the client - pings etc come back with a time out - not DNS as Pinging IP has the same result

A wired client on the same VLAN set with a static IP and the same gateway works as expected - internet access but no access to STAFF VLAN

This is really close to what we are trying to do.

>>

First VSC on Corporate VLAN with Clients receiving IP addressing from DHCP server on LAN. This is currently working as expected with the controller configured as VSC relay

>>

Actually, you don't even need the VSC to do the relay for Corporate -- do the relay somewhere else in the network instead of in the Controller (e.g. set the VLANs' subnets' gateway interface, wherever it is, for an ip-helper pointing to the DHCP server). Nothing says the Controller has to be the relay agent. (Unless there's some other reason you can't or don't want to do that, that is.)

Then you can set the Controller for DHCP server (global setting, with optiona specific DHCP server setting within the VSC) for the guests.

noemi
