We use the DNS method for controller discovery, works really well. We have defined a static host entry (A record) pointing to the Lan IP of the controller. We actually moved our controller to a new subnet last night, changed the DNS entry to point to the new IP, and within minutes all the AP's found the controller and dropped into their proper groups.

MSM 760 move to new subnet - multiple IP addresses?

We have a MSM 760 controller. All access points get its address via DHCP. Due to network restructuring, we have to change its IP address (which will be on a new subnet).

Is there a way to configure multiple IP addresses on the LAN port (so that we could change all the DHCP servers one after the other)? Or is it the best way to already enter the new address as second controller in all DHCP servers and THEN change the controller's actual address? Or is there any other solution?

P.S. This thread has been moved from Communications, Wireless (Legacy ITRC forum) to MSM Series. - Hp Forum MOderator

Good idea .... but how can I specify a DNS name in the DHCP record? By default (as discussed in the manual) it only accepts IP addresses ...

You don't have to. All the AP's have this hard coded in them to look for the DNS record CNSRV1.<DHCP option="" 015="">. So on all our subnets we define DHCP Option 015 to be ourdomain.local, then in our forward lookup zone in DNS for the zone ourdomain.local we define a static host entry for CNSRV1 pointing to the Lan IP of the controller. When the AP's boot, they look for a controller that resolves to CNSRV1 byt DNS (so you have to be handing out DNS address(es) by DHCP as well) and you are done.

Have a look in the management and config guide, search for CNSRV1 in it and there are more details.

Cheers,</DHCP>
