Can I decrease the size of a Virtual Volume

Hi,

My customer needs to decrease the zise of a virtual volume on HP 3PAR 7400c from 3TB -> 1TB. Can they do that ?

Thank you.

Re: Can I decrease the size of a Virtual Volume

Short answer?
No.

If a Virtual Volume (VV) is created thin, it will only use what storage is requested, so if the operating system only creates a partition of 1 TB, that is all that will be consumed.

However, the virtual size of a VV can only be increased, up to the 16 TB limit.

If they need a smaller virtual size, they will need to

  1. create a 1TB VV
  2. present that to the host in question
  3. stop applications to the 3TB LUN
  4. use the OS to transfer all files
  5. unpresent both VVs
  6. present the 1TB VV using the original 3TB volume's LUN assignment (<- edited for clarity)
  7. start the applications back up.

Hi ,

what do you mean in step 6 : present the 1TB VV using the original 3TB's volumes assignment ?

It would depend on the operating system and applications, but reuse the original LUN numbers, and original drive letters and/or mount points.
