New EVA generation being announced?

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/05/03/hp_fifth_gen_eva/

Maybe it has come for some more "overlapping" between the arrays like thin provisioning for the EVA/P6000? How about some SAS backends to get rid of loop issues? I hope sure hope so!

Going to be very interesting to see what comes out of this.

Any other features you guys are hoping for?

Re: New EVA generation being announced?

According to what I have seen so far HP does not announce anything anymore until a product is launched and available. Then they say "it's there" and tell about the features.
:-(

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Yeah, usually came as a bit of chock for me ;)

Maybe the post is a bit premature.

Re: New EVA generation being announced?

As far as I remember there are no announcements made for many products, for example superdome2, new blades, new hp-ux, new CPUs, new P9000 series, etc. ... until these products are released.

So I'm not surprised it is the same for P6000 array family.

But other web sites (like the one you posted above) say it will come out soon.

BTW, now all storage array are called P... (P2000, P4000, P6000, P9000) - but unfortunately any search only finds PCs and printers with similar names - great!

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: New EVA generation being announced?

I wonder where the 3PAR is going to be called?

P5000?

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Re: New EVA generation being announced?

Already seen in the past - as soon as all products are renamed to a new naming scheme, another new product will not fit into this "family" ... Now the question would be if 3par is below or above EVA, or equal???

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: New EVA generation being announced?

3PAR is certainly not below EVA.
It's more of a 'super-EVA'.
e.g. it has some kind of a 'filter layer' between all the disk drives and the volumes (=virtual disks). That allows for very flexible placement rules.

Even after that many years, the EVA cannot 'truncate' disk size like traditional RAID controllers, so you have very unpredictable behaviour if you (have to) mix disk drives of different sizes in a disk group.

3PAR does have thin-provisioning today and the ability to reclaim space from zero writes.

3PAR does have support for VMware VAAI today.

And the list could go on...

The Register says it will be announced in Las Vegas next month:

Re: New EVA generation being announced?

There is an HP News release on this.

http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/2011/110503c.html?mtxs=rss-corp-news

It seems this new EVA will have SAS back end and SAS disk drives as per this release.

Hari
