Beautiful Music for SharePoint Midmarket Customers: HPE StoreVirtual 3200 and SharePoint MiniRole



Microsoft SharePoint has a new friend that we've tested in our new Reference Architecture: SharePoint 2016 on HPE ProLiant DL380 and HPE Store Virtual 3200. Sing praises for response per second increases that boost performance and lower cost.

With HPE StoreVirtual 3200, SharePoint indeed has a new friend that we have tested in our new Reference Architecture: SharePoint 2016 on HPE ProLiant DL380 and HPE Store Virtual 3200.

In one of my previous SharePoint blogs, I shared the Reference Architecture highlighting Microsoft’s SharePoint 2016 MinRole feature. Our engineering team knew that MinRole would become one of our go-to features for end-use productivity, and it certainly is proving to be that. Lab testing demonstrated that performance improvements - improved response times and overall requests per second (RPS) throughput - are achieved when using the new MinRole server roles, as compared to deploying traditional or custom role servers.

What the "shared MiniRole" is all about - and why it's great news for your business

In SharePoint 2016 Feature Pack 1, Microsoft has introduced “shared MinRole” intended to allow building SMB farms using less servers but still having the advantages of MinRole. Results show increases in RPS throughput of more than 10% when deploying shared MinRole Front-end with Distributed Cache server VMs, configured as described in the Reference Architecture.  This increase in performance is due to the shared MinRole version providing optimized performance as part of the role implementation within SharePoint Server 2016 Feature Pack 1. We see that running web services on a MinRole front-end with Distributed Cache server is more efficient than running web services on a custom role server.

This is great news for mid-market SharePoint users who want to save money on licensing, maintenance and administration costs, and reduce the overall amount of VMs, when compared to a full MinRole deployment.

The HPE StoreVirtual 3200 is a flexible shared storage system that provides small-to-medium customers with advanced storage data services like snapshots, thin provisioning, and replication at an unprecedented price point. It is a new breed of the StoreVirtual array that gives you the flexibility to consolidate workloads, add flash storage when you are ready, and scale to meet future demands as business grows. This type of flexibility and performance has historically been limited to high end, enterprise class storage platforms and has not been available to small-and-medium customers using mission-critical applications like SharePoint.

You might be wondering what I mean by unprecedented price point statement. The starting price for the StoreVirtual 3200 is just $6,000 (estimated U.S. street price) for a 1.2 TB configuration that includes hardware and software.  HPE achieved this by using ARM processors and packaged it as a dual controller system in 2U rather than a scale-out storage with single nodes as with the 4000 series. A sizer tool too

As a companion aid to the Reference Architecture, HPE also provides a SharePoint Sizer Tool. The sizer is a downloadable application allowing you to customize input and receive an exact specification for servers and storage in their SharePoint environment. The Sizer leverages HPE knowledge gained from our field personnel, our in-lab testing of SharePoint Server 2016 and MinRole performance, and other best practices developed by both HPE and Microsoft. The Sizer generates Bills of Material for various SharePoint configurations, allowing the end-user to customize a solution design for their SharePoint deployment.
