Day 1 HPE Discover: Live in Vegas to tell the Hybrid IT story on autonomous centers of data
HPE Discover 2018 kicked off today with two ways to be Live in Vegas: in person and via video. I’m experiencing Discover the virtual way, where I joined in for the opening Hybrid IT session. Here's what I learned.
When it comes to HPE Discover, “V” definitely stands for “Vegas.” It also stands for “Virtual.” And that’s how I am participating in HPE Discover this week.
You can join in Live from Las Vegas and catch streaming session content on two channels:
- Channel 1: General session, spotlight/innovation sessions and NewsNow
- Chanel 2: All Discover Live programming
Hybrid IT session recap: Is the future of the data center autonomous?
Tuesday morning kicked off with a spotlight session led by Alain Andreoli, GM for HPE’s Hybrid IT Group.
Alain talked about the stages of the Hybrid IT journey—going from core data center to cloud computing to edge computing and, now, autonomous centers of data. He went into more detail on the core-to-cloud-edge path in key industries, such as downstream oil and gas, financial services, mobile workplace, 5G, retail and, as shown here, smart transportation.
My key takeaways from Alain’s presentation centered around new awareness of the five fundamentals of autonomous centers of data:
1. Consumption is king.
- Consumer data everywhere
- Capacity managed on demand
- Pay only for what you use
- Migration assistance
2, Software-defined enables center of data everywhere.
- Seamless data orchestration across multi-cloud
- Automated infrastructure management
- Composable infrastructure
3. Security will make or break you.
- Security embedded into the infrastructure
- Proactive detection and recovery from threats
- Protected centers of data everywhere
4. Think core to cloud to edge.
- Multi-purpose infrastructure
- Specialized infrastructure
- Hyperconverged infrastructure
- Composable infrastructure
- Edge infrastructure
5. AI enables autonomy everywhere.
- Remote AI-based predictive analysis
- Proactive identification of issues and remote diagnostics
- Self-aware, self-managing and self-healing
Alain was followed by Bill Philbin, CTO, Hybrid IT Group, who talked more about applying AI in the data center and shared an HPE InfoSight demo. Simply put, HPE InfoSight is predictive machine learning in the cloud. It analyzes and correlates millions of sensors from all globally deployed systems, continuously learning as it analyzes this data to make every system smarter and more reliable.
Next up came Patrick Moorhead, Founder, President and Principal Analyst with Moor Insights & Strategy, who moderated a customer panel that included insights from these visionaries: Dr. Steven Pratt, CTO, CenterPoint Energy; David Bernert, Chief Architect, Boeing; Greg Scheu, president of the Americas and a member of the Group Executive Committee, ABB; and Bob Mills, Director, Strategy & Planning, IT Ops/Info Tech, Ford. The participating customers spoke passionately about their companies and how they are using automation to enable truly autonomous centers of data.
The hour-long spotlight session concluded with Krista Satterthwaite, VP of Portfolio Marketing, Hybrid IT Group, who emphasized the business benefits to be derived from autonomous centers of data in terms of agility, simplicity and savings.
If you missed this spotlight session live, you can catch the replay now: Is the future of the data center autonomous?
Watch and learn more about the autonomous data center
These two videos tell more of our story. First see how the power of AI is creating more autonomous customer experiences in industries all around us. Is the data center next? HPE definitely thinks so.
And here Bill Philbin talks to HPEStorageGuy Calvin Zito about plans for the autonomous data center with HPE InfoSight.
Stay tuned for more shared virtual experiences from HPE Discover!

Meet Infrastructure Insights blogger Melissa Saegert Elicker, Managing Editor, Hybrid IT. Melissa brings her depth of experience in technology topics and a passion for the well-written word to the Hybrid IT blogging and social media program at HPE. (Sometimes Melissa attends HPE Discover in person and sometimes she attends virtually. She loves blogging about the event either way.)
