Labs photonics researchers win best paper award

Along with his co-authors, Hewlett Packard Labs researcher Yuan Yuan was awarded the Best Paper Award in Industry Innovation at Octoberโ€™s Asia Communications and Photonics Conference, the largest optical conference in the Asia-Pacific region. Yuan works in Labsโ€™ Large-Scale Integrated Photonics (LSIP) group.

The paper, โ€œA 4ร—100 Gb/s DWDM Optical Link with All-Silicon Microring Transmitters and Receivers,โ€ proves the feasibility of an all-Silicon, Germanium-free, high-speed dense wavelength division multiplexing optical link. The paper proposes a 4-channel 100 Gb/s microring modulator array and a 100 Gb/s microring photodiode.

โ€œThe ACP best paper award in industry innovation is an incentive for us, which shows that the all-Si DWDM architecture is a potential solution for high-speed, low-cost optical interconnects with standard Si photonics process,โ€ says Yuan. โ€œAnd LSIP is an industry pioneer in Si photonics and heterogeneous III-V integration. The efforts and collaboration of the entire lab members are key of this research work!โ€

The paper was co-authored with Labsโ€™ Wayne V. Sorin, Stanley Cheung, Yiwei Peng, Zhihong Huang, Di Liang, Marco Fiorentino, and Raymond G. Beausoleil.

โ€œI was very happy to see Yuanโ€™s work, and that of his teammates, recognized on such an important stage,โ€ says his team lead and Labs distinguished technologist Marco Fiorentino. โ€œIt is a demonstration that the work we do at Labs is not only relevant for the growth of the company and HPEโ€™s customers but also advances the state of the art in photonics technologies.โ€
