Today we’re celebrating Molina Oung’s recent win at the Innovation Technology AtlanTec Gateway Excellence Awards 2022, Molina received the ‘New Talent Award’ for her outstanding career achievements and community contributions.

Molina Oung is a Cybersecurity Analyst at HPE Galway. She is originally from Boston, Massachusetts, and holds a degree in Software Engineering and Computer Science.

Molina joined HPE in January of 2020 as a Graduate Intern working in a 24/7 Security Operations Center detecting and analyzing security incidents from multiple sources across HPE’s network. She identifies the causes of incidents and responds to them by applying containment and eradication strategies.

After completing her 11-month internship, Molina was made permanent in a new role and team as a senior analyst, training other analysts and supporting the onboarding of multiple HPE customers of the managed security service her team provides. She continues to proactively hunt incidents, participates in developing the security protection landscape, and activates cyber incident response procedures.

Last year, she completed a Certification in Vulnerability Management through Rapid7, the Nexpose Certified Administrator. She is also currently studying a level 9 Postgraduate Certificate in Cybersecurity for Business at the National University of Ireland Galway and will complete two Cybersecurity Certifications later this year: the CompTia Security+ and the Certified Ethical Hacker.

Alongside her role as Cybersecurity Analyst, Molina commits her free time as Chairperson of the HPE Employee Resource Group, Women in Security (WiS) Galway. The ERG’s mission is to raise awareness of the varying career opportunities within Security while encouraging inclusion and diversity, creating awareness of the career progression opportunities within HPE, and maximizing individual potential to maintain and grow new talent in the sector.

Molina has led the group through many initiatives and efforts in the community and for the company. She has organized and taught cybersecurity awareness training for different age groups. She has planned and spoken at multiple university recruitment and engagement talks about cybersecurity and what it’s like working in a tech company. She has organized internal events and talks to promote opportunities for team members to connect, network, share ideas, advocate for one another, and progress within their careers.

Additionally, last year, Molina and members of WiS organized a project called Cybersecurity: How do we Learn, which brought together Interns from Data Analytics and Security groups to work together to present and discover how cyber awareness and learning types correlate with different age brackets and education levels in the public. This was done by surveying and analyzing the results, which were then used to help WiS deliver enhanced cybersecurity awareness training in the future. This project helped interns communicate and work together, showing them the importance of leveraging connections, time management, and working with different groups on a team to reach one goal.

One of Molina’s biggest achievements for WiS is leading a team in creating and recording a Cybersecurity Essentials Training Video series for the Sophie Hayes Foundation (SHF), a non-profit organization in the UK that supports survivors of human trafficking. The training includes information on personal security, phishing, encryption and so much more. The content of the training was made in collaboration with the survivors of SHF using their informed feedback. The first training session with an initial group took place this February while a public launch is planned to commence later in the year so that other affiliates and survivors from different organizations can participate in the training.

Through their commitment and involvement in the community and the office, Molina, and members of WiS dispel preconceptions that a career in security is male-dominated while also showing young girls and students of varying backgrounds that a career in cyber and tech-related industries is fulfilling and rewarding.

In addition to WiS, Molina has also volunteered her time as a Mentor for the Online Cyber Security Conversion Programme run through ITAG. There, she shared her skills and experience to support mentees within the program in achieving career objectives. This was accomplished through zoom calls where mentees met with mentors and discussed their projects while mentors offered advice and support relating to career development.

Molina is an exemplary example of ‘New Talent’ within HPE and continues to embody the values of empowering people in her network, being a force for good, and being a leader, especially during the uncharted waters of the pandemic, supporting and uplifting her team, company, and community.
