5 strategic steps to adapt functional testing to mobile apps

The rapid pace of mobile apps demands new approaches to functional testing. To bring high-quality software to market quickly, you need a strategy that moves you beyond the limitations of the testing conducted on devices that you manage in your internal lab.

The fact is: Conventional manual testing, which is often the norm for desktop and web applications, simply cannot meet the challenges of testing mobile apps.

Is there anything I should know about functional testing of mobile apps?

That’s a great question! While your performance testing should be based around real scenarios that users are likely to perform, you need to make sure your application behaves correctly when it’s being used by an end-user. This is the essence of functional testing.

Mobile applications are expected to exceed the quality standards to which desktop applications and desktop browser-based applications are held—whether they are native applications or mobile browser-based applications. This is why functional testing of the mobile application needs to be integrated into your application lifecycle management infrastructure.

You’ve probably heard of HP Unified Functional Testing (UFT), HP’s flagship functional testing product. HP UFT Mobile extends UFT to enable full end-to-end testing of mobile applications on real devices. It lets you develop and run automated tests on multiple devices at the same time. It provides a dedicated cloud-based environment of mobile devices to support your testing needs, and makes them available to you wherever you are.

The five strategic steps that will adapt your functional testing processes to mobile devices

  1. Test mobile apps on real devices
  2. Use the cloud to host your testing reference devices
  3. Automate mobile app testing
  4. Test mobile apps under different network conditions
  5. Leverage your existing processes and tools

Each of these steps is supported by HP UFT Mobile.  If you are interested in seeing more details about these five steps, check out the “Mobile Testing: follow these five strategic steps to simplify and accelerate app testing” white paper.

So together with HP LoadRunner and HP Performance Center, HP UFT and HP UFT Mobile can introduce real device, application-side testing into your mobile load and performance tests. This full, end-to-end testing allows you to create very realistic test scenarios that will closely match and predict what the end user will actually experience.
