A great weekend of mobile hacking

I've been working in the Bay Area for the best part of the last almost 20 years and I've seen a lot of things come and go. I remember the days when Craigslist was simply run by Craig Newmark out of his loft in the city and he'd throw parties to bring together everyone working on the web. I also remember when we discussed merging our Web Development firm with a company that did WAP development back in 1999. A lot has changed since those lofty days of the Internet Boom and we experienced quite a bust after that period. But as everyone knows, the Silicon Valley is based on a bust and boom, bust and boom economy. This is  not because we create bubbles, but because we create. And when we create the world takes notice.

That's why it was so exciting to be part of the HP Anywhere Hackathon this past weekend. It reminded me of those lofty days of the web when people came together to create things. People created, not just because they had funding, but because they saw the future.  They wanted to not only be a part of the future, but they wanted to shape it as well. And that's what I saw this weekend up in San Francisco. I saw a group of people come together to build the latest and greatest enterprise mobile applications on a platform built by the founders of Silicon Valley, and it was good.

The setting was just right, a loft style building with an open floor plan and a view from upstairs to down from all sides setup at Parisoma.  There was a full house of developers at the event--ranging from marketing types to ones you wondered if they lived out of their cars--but everyone came together to spend the weekend without sleep to try to create something new.

In the end, there were designated winners, but in truth I believe everyone who was there came out with just a little more knowledge, a little more understanding and the experience gave me a renewed faith in the incredible talent and technology that's shaping the next boom. Be sure to check out all the coverage on the Apps for Mobile blog.
