As we start into 2012, many retailers have just closed a busy holiday season.  Since many retailers make most of their revenue during the holiday shopping season now is a good time to look back on sales and buying behaviors to prepare for the next year.  Some will notice a growing trend of customers using online and mobile device to make their holiday purchases.  Black Friday online retail sales were sky rocketing and latest reports indicate Cyber Monday have now taken the lead as the largest online sales day of the year, end user experience cannot longer be ignored.

Market numbers estimate around 10% of online purchases on Cyber Monday were made from mobile devices. Smart phones and tablets are some of the most wished for gifts this season while mobile adoption among consumers is changing the way end users are consuming the web. In times where mobile consumers can scan product barcodes in stores and compare prices online in a click, get quotes for a new car or an insurance policy, check their account balance and even pay for their favorite coffee using their phone, there’s no wonder ensuring the availability of online business transactions is becoming mandatory as businesses strive to secure revenue.

IT is now facing an even more dynamic and rapidly changing environment as users can access the internet from anywhere anytime using their mobile devices. Operations monitoring teams and support teams are facing new challenges - Are mobile users experiencing the site similarly to traditional users? Do mobile applications provide the same response times as the original web apps? Who are the app users? Are there any performance problems or servers issues related to a specific mobile device or platform?

Application development and testing teams have to adjust to short dev cycles in order to release new apps and push app updates to end user devices. How can development and testing teams decide which mobile platforms should be tested? What are the common platforms used by consumers? How can they ensure all business transactions for various mobile platforms are covered in testing?

In order to meet these requirements HP Real User Monitor now provides support for end user experience monitoring for Mobile devices. HP Real user monitor, a passive agent-less solution,  is installed in a single point in the data center and does not require any agents installed on the mobile devices or code instrumentation in the application. HP Real User Monitor monitors all your mobile users’ sessions, from all locations all the time, discovers their devices and client applications - You will now be able to perform root cause analysis in context with the end-user experiencing the issues.

RUM helps you narrow down the problem to the finest granular level and understand user experience per device, lined to the web server/web application and backend application tiers. Once detected, performance and availability issues can be reported as alerts for a specific mobile device and events can be generated respectively. Finally, once issues are resolved, support teams can generate testing scripts from a real user’s mobile session (can be set to a particular device like iPhone) to be used regularly in testing and in pre-production tests to help prevent future issues.

Additionally, the following features are supported as well:

-          Provide visibility to user sessions by mobile device and OS.

-          Rich filtering capabilities for user sessions.

-          Provide a distribution of users (user names) per mobile device

-          Provide a breakdown of page performance by mobile device.
