FAST mobile apps – develop and deliver faster

JohnJ_1 ‎06-06-2014 01:01 AM - edited ‎09-07-2015 08:55 PM

I was recently talking w/ one of our engineers, Ion Padilla who works in one of HP’s Innovation Centers.
The HP Innovation Centers are all about creating innovative business breakthroughs and helping business executives to explore and expand their business vision – they have teams of people who work with customers to create business innovation.  Ion told me about how he was creating a custom mobile app for a customer who was visiting next week.

One of the things he did was to model a customer business app and then create a mobile app to help the customer see the vision of a possible future state.

I kept asking him questions and learned more about how he was able to go so fast.

Here’s what I learned:

  1. He’s using as a modeling/protoyping tool.   With this, he’s able to create the wireframes, ux logic, and user flow without spending time on detail coding.
(of course he could be using axure or some other prototyping tool, but he’s using
  2. He takes the output from and is able to create a multi-platform enterprise mobile app from it using HP Anywhere.   He says it only takes four extra steps to create a working app.  (not including the mobile back-end and legacy data)
  3. Then, he deploys the app with HP Anywhere and is able to show the app to his users on their iPhone, Android or Win8 device.

All I had to say was PDC (pretty darn cool).   A working app in just a few hours!!!

Of course, there’s still a bunch of heavy lifting to be done.  The design and user experience needs to be refined and hardened.  The app still needs to be tested on a variety of devices.  And the server side programming of how to connect and interact with back end systems needs to be built and tested.  The new app must be optimized for network conditions and real world performance and then user monitoring is the final step before really deploying the production version.

But, imagine what you can do if you can have a working mobile app (prototype) in hours as opposed to weeks.   How agile is that?

The sign of truly operating in a “User First” world, is being able to quickly show them the draft app and get their feedback.  Or, even to give a few of them a hands on experience w/ the draft app is incredibly powerful.  When they take your app in their hands, you can ask them – will this help you?  Will it meet your needs?  What else does it need to do?  The potential is unlimited… all you need is the courage, the tools and the time.
