HP Global IT evolution wows customers galore at HP Discover

Managing the IT services of a company with more than 300,000 people is a momentous challenge.

If you were put into this position, how would you address the management of an environment with 2000 applications, 47,000 servers and 66,000 network devices?

This is the everyday experience of the HP Global IT team. This group is responsible for the IT components which typically generate 2.5B events presenting major challenges for any IT entity and their tools.

Of course, transforming that environment to embrace new technologies, new delivery methods, and be able to support new devices multiplies the changes that can (and do) impact the business. The situation is already complicated and then you add the complexity of Cloud, Big Data, Mobility and you strain skills, tools, processes and bring fresh challenges in many aspects of IT Management.

Yet we’re here, and we welcome you to the new Style of IT!

But these old/new themes aren’t black and white. They define points along a journey that is changing IT design and in particular IT management tools and processes.

Some of these changes are additive. There is an increased need to relate and correlate status, availability and performance across all layers.   These design choices mean that new data types and sources must be added to the scope of IT management solutions. They also need to be stored effectively because it’s not possible to ascertain upfront which data source is going to be the most useful to solve each problem. There is a new way to understand the most beneficial data source; adding analytics capabilities is proving to be a very effective method of extracting the value from the data.

These aspects and more such as targeting increased operational efficiencies and returning operational costs to innovation are just a few that have driven evolution in HP Global IT, their tools, methods and processes. And guess what? It’s paying off.

At this year’s HP Discover, HP Global IT is sharing some of the return on experience they have gained, from applying new techniques to IT operations issues. Some examples they are showing sparkling examples of what can be achieved.

If you are attending HP Discover, we recommend visiting booth 400 to discuss with HP Global IT experts and learn from these experiences. I know the team would love to speak with you about their process and experience.

In particular they will describe to you just how they have been able to transform it consolidating from 28 data centres to 6, all while still adding private cloud and mobility solutions to support the business.

Powerful tools can be strong enablers to this evolution and finding new ways to provide value back to the stakeholders that support IT efforts. The diagram shows how they use HP IT Operations management software tools to govern the value they provide back to their stakeholders.

As business demand increase in HP’s own transformation, the sheer scale of IT complexity means new solutions are required.

This diagram illustrates some of the aspects of the scale of things HP Global IT is addressing today.

You can also note a couple of data points concerning a use case that led them to explore Big Data Analytics for IT Operations. In one case HP Global IT were able to provide subject matter experts with a HP Operations Analytics, a big data analytics solution, adding to classical diagnostic tools. They applied this solution to qualify an issue concerning database latency and poor response times in a composite application architecture, and were able to diagnose the root cause 72 times than without this analytics capability. Preliminary analysis and using estimated SME costs, it can be estimated that this could results in terrific It operations savings costs of several tens or hundreds of millions of dollars.

This is pragmatic example has thoroughly excited HP Global IT to now apply HP Operations Analytics to other use cases such as network latency, and Email architecture issues.
