I had the chance to sit in a customer meeting today. The customer is a large bank that’s planning a major change in its business and its IT. And they wanted to know what we could do to help.

  • This customer is currently serving a specific country with in-house, on-premise IT.
  • The business is expanding its global presence and is planning to start servicing additional countries and continents.
  • As part of this transition the bank is also planning to move to a hybrid IT model, and add private and public cloud infrastructure.

The discussion revolved around the way to transform the current monitoring capabilities to support these changes.

I’d like to share some of the main points that came up:

  • Multi-geo – As the bank tries to support additional locations it’s important to monitor the user experience of these new locations. As the bank currently has HP’s Business Process Monitoring solution, we discussed the need to expand the points of presence so that user experience can be measured from the new location. We also mentioned HP’s SaaS offering Performance Anywhere ( that can be used for monitoring the user experience of the new public cloud services.
  • Enabling monitoring on the cloud – In the case of agent-based monitoring, the agents should be built into the images that are dynamically spun-up on the cloud. This will get the required information into IT for every additional machine that’s provisioned to support ever changing user demands.
The other aspect of enabling monitoring on the cloud is security. Different configurations may vary from a security configuration – for example, running agents under the root user. Cloud deployment may require stricter security and configurations may need to be changed in comparison to configurations used in an on-premise deployment.
  • Cloud cost monitoring – the move to cloud is quite often driven by cost savings. The ability to add/remove resources based on demand means the cost of IT can be adapted based on actual usage needs. However cloud costs are calculated based on various aspects, and customers may want to monitor the relevant metrics that are used to calculate these charges. For example networking costs are very important for cloud cost calculations, whereas on-premise costs are not usually affected by the amount of traffic passing through the network. Customers may want to monitor these types of metrics to get insight into the actual cost of their cloud environment.
  • Infrastructure monitoring on the cloud – When using the public cloud the customer expects the cloud provider to meet the agreed upon SLA for CPU, memory, disk and other infrastructure requirements. In this case customer infrastructure monitoring may be limited to minimal metrics that will enable tracking of the SLA.
  • Business vs. Infrastructure – Last, but definitely not least, the focus of all monitoring should be metrics that are aligned with and provide insight to the business. This is true for cloud-based applications, as well as on-premise ones. However as we mentioned in the previous point, the move to cloud can allow for less infrastructure monitoring, this enables more focus on business related monitoring (e.g. BPM, RUM etc.).

After speaking with this customer, I am glad that we were able to help this bank explore different solutions and considerations so it is fully equipped and ready for its expansion.
