Part 2: Diagnostics 9.20 - Increasing efficiency while enhancing collaboration

This is the second in a series of posts on HP Diagnostics 9.20, which was released several weeks ago during HP Discover .  Each post will talk about a specific new and/or enhanced feature or capability of this release of Diagnostics and how it will benefit you.

The first post talked about a new feature called "Java Thread State Analyzer", which helps both application developers AND IT Ops people quickly find issues with applications, such as deadlocked or blocked threads.  Translation?  Increased efficiency when finding application-related problems, quicker MTTR, and increased collaboration between application developers and IT operations.

This post will discuss another new feature, one that also enhances collaboration between not only pre-production and production people within a company’s four walls, but also collaboration amongst companies and their cloud or service providers.  That new feature is called .pdf export.

.pdf Export – what it is?

It is often desirable for an administrator on the IT Ops or Operations Bridge team to export information to an application developer in a format that is ideal for digesting that information. In previous versions of Diagnostics, the only export format choices were html and CSV.  And, as we heard from our customers, this is NOT an ideal format.

With Diagnostics 9.20, a new PDF export format is available. This format is excellent for e-mailing detailed information to a developer or subject matter expert (SME).   And it is very quick and easy to do, as seen below:

In addition, an option is presented to append to an existing PDF file. So an administrator can append a large number of different screens into an existing file to e-mail to the developer or SME, as shown below:

How to export to .pdf

For those of you unfamiliar with HP Diagnostics, there are two ways to perform a .pdf export.  First is in Enterprise UI, where you can export in every view of the UI through the “tools” menu. This is indicated by a wrench icon in the upper right of the Enterprise UI, as shown in the first screenshot of this blog post.

You  can export to a .pdf file in something called the "Java Profiler" as well (sometimes this is simply referred to as "Profiler").  In fact, the .pdf export feature is even more powerful when used here because you can export multiple or ALL tabs of data in one simple step.  Simply look for the Acrobat ICON in the “action menu” and you are ready to go!

For more information on this feature, check out Chapter 2 of the HP Diagnostics 9.20 User’s Guide entitled “Common Control in the Diagnostics UI”.

Increased collaboration amongst many groups of people

Obviously, the main benefit of the .pdf export feature is collaboration.  What is not so apparent are the groups of people that can benefit from it.  As mentioned before, the NOC or Operations Bridge, after having determined there is indeed an issue with an application, can now send information to the application developer(s) that is much more digestible – making it easier (and quicker) for them to determine the root cause issue with the application, of course ultimately reducing MTTR.

The other parties that benefit from this feature are the IT ops team as well as service or cloud providers that the company may be using.  Instead of the usual finger-pointing and supposed accusations, companies can now let cloud providers know with certainty that the issue is in the cloud AND provide the necessary information to their provider.  The result? Less time arguing.  Higher efficiencies on the cloud provider’s part when finding what may be wrong on their end resulting in higher quality of service and increased ability to meet or exceed agreed-upon SLAs.

As this and the preceding post have shown, HP Diagnostics has added great new features that make people more productive and efficient and also increase collaboration amongst groups not only within a company’s four walls, but also with entities that companies rely on for outsourced services.

Stay tuned for the next Diagnostics 9.20 post, which will discuss another new feature that helps people be more efficient, in addition to allowing more flexibility and customization when using the Diagnostics tool.
