UFT 12: Staying in step with Application Lifecycle Management 12

Michael-Deady ‎03-19-2014 08:42 AM - edited ‎09-09-2015 04:21 PM

They are here! The newest versions of Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) and Unified Functional Testing (UFT) have just been announced! I am so excited, that I can hardly contain myself.

In this series of articles I will take a step-by-step look at UFT 12.O beginning with the requirements, prerequisites the installation process and how to set up the tool. Finally I will create videos with commentary on the new features, enhancements and tips and tricks.

Before addressing anything about the install process, let’s get the white elephant out of the room and talk about the new features of UFT 12 and what they mean for you. We know that UFT 11.5 was a significant release that brought together two major functional testing tool sets: QuickTest Pro and Service Test.  Quick Test Pro, which was mainly designed for GUI testing while Service Test, was designed around the concept of middleware and back-end testing.

With the introduction of UFT 11.5 we offered new features and enhancements such as Image-based Intelligence, PDF reader and an IDE type of user interface. In fact, the only thing that HP development team left out in this version was the kitchen sink. (Or so I thought!) UFT 12.0 has additional new enhancements such as HTML 5 (covered in later article), support for all the major browsers (which we will cover in another article as well) and a smaller and faster installation package that can run without the need to deactivate the User Account Control.

How would I rank the enhancements and changes to UFT 12?

  1. Platform is much more stable as is script performance
  2. UFT 12 is backward compatible with ALM 11.x
  3. Better integration with ALM
  4. UFT Installation: faster, smaller, and more secure
  5. Additional support for HTML5 objects
  6. Support for the latest versions of each of the browsers
  7. ALM AUT Parameters—Now for GUI tests too
  8. New UFT look and feel for BPT
  9. Run GUI tests on safari from a remote Mac computer
  10. Conditionally upload run results to ALM after a Run Session
  11. Run both GUI and API tests using virtualized services
  12. Creating web service activities by importing a network capture into an API Test
  13. Import a Web Application Description Language (WADL) for API tests
  14. New testing extensibility support for Visual Studio 2010 and 2012
  15. Run flex tests on Multiple UFT Instances Simultaneously (Windows Sever)
  16. Connect to ALM Using External Authentication (e.g. CAC)
  17. Find help more easily and new, web-based Help
  18. Use the Run Results Deletion Tool Directly from the Run Results Viewer
  19. More detailed reporting options in the UFT Self Check Tool
  20. Stop your run session Using a shortcut key
  21. Enable or disable test runs to stop at breakpoints during an ALM or Automation Run
  22. See details of your test's virtualized services in the run results
  23. Continue running GUI tests on a remote computer after disconnecting
  24. Simplified parameter management
  25. Simplified configuration for flex applications
  26. New flex test object methods and properties
  27. Specify areas to ignore in an Insight Test Object Image
  28. Pass output parameters from a called API test back to the calling GUI test
  29. Make your ALM or Network-Based GUI Tests into Portable Tests
  30. Create 64-Bit COM object references
  31. Action templates and external properties are back
  32. Use the errors pane to detect unmapped repository parameters
  33. Add-in enhancements for Web, Dojo, and SAP

The question I really want an answer to, is how you would rank these new enhancements and features? I know for me, anything that increases the performance of scripts and reliability will always get top marks. However things like backwards compatibility with ALM that allow me to use UFT 12’s new features and enhancements even on older ALM versions gets strong marks as well.

One must not discount the act of simplifying the install process. The only negative I have found after my time reviewing the software is the limited compatibility with Windows 8 ( I understand it is only a matter of time before this is fixed.)

I can’t wait to show you more about UFT 12. I will discuss more in my next blog and focus on the integration between UFT and ALM.

Can't wait to use it!

BUT: our standard PC is running Windows 7 with IE 8.

We're upgrading to IE 10 in May then IE 11 later this year.

Any problems running UFT 12 with this setup?

I don't expect us to upgrade to Windows 8.X anytime soon.

I have experienced many problems with UFT 12.  I have Windows 7, IE 10/ the sample applications do not work (win or web.) Object recognition does not work. A few of the popup windows are short and do not display the full buttons. I am thinking that maybe I installed the application incorrectly. I have a 30-day trial version. If I uninstall the application and reinstall a new app will I still have my remaining trail days?

I would run a repair first; However, to answer  your question yes you should have the remaining time left, if you have a sales representative, I would recommend contacting them and ask for a 30-day  extension. If you don't know your sales representative, please call "1-877-686-9637" or go to "HP Sales"

We are on 11.5 of uft but want to go to 12.0 , is it in fact comapatable with IE11

How can I redefine the short cuts in UFT12?

I'm using Hungarian keyboard and I'm not able to use & { } (and some other) caracters.

I didn't find any option in the IDE. Is there any file maybe where this configuration is set?

First of all, thank for your question, I'm attempting to find answer to your question; I was wondering if you could give me little more detail, are you simply attempting to map a few special charters or are liking for support around the Hungarian language?

It would be nice to see some worked out examples where REST API and/or WebServices are used together with GUI actions especially where data exchange is involved. I'm struggling with the clearly 2 different products (ST with scripting in C# and all kinds of pretty nice data linking between subsequent service requests and FT/QTP with scripting in VBScript and unclear data exchange possibilities) forcibly merged into one.

what is the parameter to set the "Conditionally upload run results to ALM after a Run Session"??

Or is there any way to run the test on UFT (by itself) and the result not be uploaded on ALM 12?

Hello, Can you share the HP ALM UFT version 12 VPAT with me?  It is needed before GSA can upgrade to ver 12.

Thank you, Dianne
