4 Key Reasons to Upgrade to Windows Server 2012

Last September, Microsoft introduced the latest version of Windows Server, Windows Server 2012.

This Operating System powers many of the worlds’ largest datacenters, enables small businesses around the world, and delivers value to organizations of all sizes in between.

Windows Server 2012 redefines the server category, delivering hundreds of new features and enhancements spanning virtualization, networking, storage, user experience, cloud computing, automation, and more. Windows Server 2012 helps customers transform their IT operations to reduce cost and deliver a completely new level of business value.

Today we are going to look at 4 key reasons to upgrade to Windows Server 2012:

  • Simplified Management
  • Affordable Storage
  • Improved Access
  • Better Availability.

1. Simplified Management

Windows Server 2012 gives users management efficiency by providing more automation of common management tasks and offers users a path toward full lights-out automation. When talking about Windows Server 2012’s simplified management features, there are two I feel the need to mention Server Manager and PowerShell 3.0.

Without a central, integrated tool, it can be a difficult task to effectively manage all the servers on the network. Windows Server 2012 provides customers with Server Manager, a feature which allows one to manage multiple servers and perform tasks such as deploying roles and features remotely (to both physical and virtual servers), and creating custom server groups. In addition, Windows PowerShell 3.0 provides a comprehensive management platform for all aspects of the data center: servers, network, and storage.

Windows Server 2012 also offers improved compliance with management standards and improved inter-operability. Management experiences are also unified-- across both physical and virtual servers & whether managing systems on premises or in a cloud. These are just some of the simplified management features of Windows Server 2012.

2. Affordable Storage

Cost efficiency is another reason to upgrade. Windows Server 2012 allows customers to leverage commodity storage, networking, and server infrastructure for the best operating economics of any platform. Windows Server 2012 also delivers better power efficiency and includes a number of improvements at the Hyper-V host and guest operating system levels that reduce the power consumption of the servers and save the customer money on operating costs.

New file server features introduced in Windows Server 2012 let users store server application data on file shares, and obtain a similar level of reliability, availability, manageability, and high performance that is expected from a SAN, without the expense. In addition, Storage Spaces offers cost effective, optimally used, highly available, scalable, and flexible storage solutions for business-critical deployments.

3. Improved Access

Windows Server 2012 enables seamless, always-on access to a virtualized work environment from virtually anywhere from almost any device. Windows Server 2012 centralized desktops, simple-to-deploy remote access, and branch location solutions provide an easy way to give customers access to corporate infrastructure while maintaining security and compliance. Windows Server 2012 gives improved access through simpler deployment and management of virtual desktops, a rich Windows experience across WANs and LANs, and access from virtually anywhere from almost any device.

4. Better Availability

Windows Server 2012 provides cost-effective, highest IT service uptime to protect against a wide range of failure scenarios, prevent downtime, and speed recovery when needed. With Windows Server 2012, users get replication of virtual machines, for the purposes of business continuity. This, along with the disaster recovery features of Hyper-V Replica, gives customers a quicker recovery, and less downtime, in the case of a disaster. Windows Server 2012 also provides fault tolerance for network adaptors with NIC teaming. This allows multiple network interfaces to work together as a team, and prevents connectivity loss if one network interface card fails. Windows Server 2012 allows customers to connect users more easily to IT resources, providing better availability of all assets to all users.
