Accelerate HPE Servers with solutions from Intel
We all know it is good to have the most up to date technology. But sometimes, a total server refresh simply is not an option. Whether your IT is limited by budget, time, or other constraints, that doesnโt mean it canโt benefit from new technology! In these cases, it is good to explore additional upgrades that can be made to the existing server infrastructure.
In this new session of Coffee Coaching, Landon Bagby from the HPE/Intel team explains a few options that can benefit any company from SMB to enterprise.
If itโs not in the books yet for a total server refresh, but you still want to boost performance (and, letโs be honest, who doesnโt want that?) there are a few different options you can consider.
A great place to start is at the heart of the server, the server processor. It is important to switch to the latest Intel processor, Haswell, so your business is able to take advantage of the latest performance and efficiency features. With this offering from Intel, you are able to choose processors that range from 4-18 cores, ensuring you are providing the best fit for your workload.
The next step is to examine your storage solution. For example, is your SMB currently utilizing SAS hard drives? Did you know, hard drives are a legacy architecture with possible high failure rates due to the large number of moving parts within the disk? Intel Solid State Drives (SSDs) on the other hand do not have any moving parts and the mean time between failures is over 2,000,000 hours. Speed and endurance, along with lower power consumption, are just a few reasons why 50% of workloads will be hosted by SSDs by the year 2018.
The full potential of the SSDs will not be realized if there is now ay to get the data in and out of the server. By upgrading from a 1GbE network connection to a 10 GbE network connection, you are able to adapt newer applications and processes to streamline their environment. With 80% of applications being optimized for 10GbE connectivity, the benefits are available to a wide array of use cases, including businesses that are heavily virtualized and moving to a software defined datacenter.
While these are all examples of hardware upgrades that could be made, we canโt overlook software upgrades! SMBs wanting to increase performance and security should always migrate to the newest version of Microsoftยฎ Windows Serverยฎ OS, currently Windows Server 2012 R2.
While all of these upgrades will help individually, the true value is what is accomplished when you put them all together. By adding an Intelยฎ Xeonยฎ Haswell processor, adding Intel Solid State Drives, Intel 10 GbE network connection, and migrating to Windows Server 2012 R2, your business may be able to accommodate up to 160% more Microsoft Exchange users, double the amount of Microsoft Exchange Virtual Machines (VMs), and double the amount of database VMs in the server.
