Don’t Miss the Spiceheads Review of the ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 (and Learn What a “Spicehead” Is)!

In Denis Kelley's Spiceworks' review of the HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8, Denis comments on everything from the form factor, “As a small server, I love the form factor,” to the price, “For the price of the HP entry model, it comes with a surprising amount of enterprise features.” After reviewing many different features of the MicroServer, Denis provides his final verdict on the system, and we just had to share what he said!

He states: “The HP ProLiant MicroServer is a great product for its costs. The thought that kept occurring to me was that it was a NAS that wants to be enterprise equipment. I guess it is still trying to find its identity. On one hand you have multiple NICs, iLO4, Intelligent Provisioning, and a RAID controller; on the other you have flimsy HD caddies and screws and limited options for RAM. This kit is perfect for a single SMB server, an awesome test lab, or a virtual host for non critical servers. For the entry price of a bit over $500, I’m thinking of getting one for my home.”

Thank you Denis for sharing your thoughts on the HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 with the community! We love hearing what people think of the MicroServer.

The HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 server’s compact form factor and affordable price are just two features that make it such a great choice for growing businesses. The MicroServer Gen8 is a small, quiet, and stylishly designed server that is ideal as a first server solution for small businesses. This server offers users hassle-free serviceability features, including two up-front USB ports, as well as tool-less access to hard drives, memory, and PCI slots for simple installation.

While the HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 is tested and certified to work with Windows Server 2008 R2 (and is what Denis installed during his testing of the server), we recommend pairing  the MicroServer Gen8 with Windows Server 2012 Foundation or Essentials edition. When paired with Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Foundation, customers get an affordable solution for up to 15 users. If more than 10 users are required, Essentials is the recommended pairing giving the customer up to 25 users and integrated management of local or cloud based Exchange, or Office 365, as well as client PC backup.

Still wondering where the "Spicehead" term came from? Here's the answer.
