Edge is ready for Enterprise-class Software

By Peter Koslowski

Have you had a chance to visit IoT conferences this year?  No matter where in the world you might have attended - Barcelona, Hannover, San Francisco, Singapore or Tokyo โ€“ one message probably came though crystal clear: Edge is ready for Enterprise to embrace connected logic and extend business processes to where Things reside.

Digitalization has been modifying and re-writing business processes for years, but what is new is the technological innovation, which allows to bring Enterprise-class Logic to the Edge and allow Enterprise-class Software run at the Edge.  Here are a couple of innovative ways to now use these new capabilities:

  • Data Management - Rather than processing Edge data centrally by sending it to your data warehouse in a raw state, where it has to be cleaned and analyzed, why not do it at the Edge? There are other reasons why you would choose to do it that way because it is economically viable or meets the business requirements. Your Edge can today fulfill this role through running Enterprise-class Software.
  • Automation and Intelligence - Application of AI methods combined with Automation is another example of Enterprise-class Logic shifting to the Edge. Using data collected at the Edge, Machine Learning generates new game-changing category of insights into your business, and by applying rules turns it into action, making it a self-driven process. Cognitive automation can bring intelligence to data intensive processes running at the Edge and model the intelligence to extend human decision making.
  • Business Models - Edge computing disrupts business models by creating new network-centric ways enterprises can connect with partners to create new business. Using Blockchain enterprises leverage and gain insights not only from their own stored data, but also from that of their business partners. Blockchain is an example of Enterprise-class Software, which could not be deployed without the Edge.
