Four Steps for Finding Your Ideal Partner

February is the month of love and romance! Have you found your perfect match? Whether in life or in IT finding your perfect match can be quite a process. Coffee Coaching is here to help! We have created a list of 4 simple steps for finding the perfect Windows Server 2012 - HP ProLiant Gen8 pairing.

1. Get to know your customer’s needs

When getting ready to find the perfect match, you must first know what your customer’s needs are.  Does your customer require Windows Server 2012 Datacenter edition, which is designed for highly virtualized private cloud environments, or would Standard edition, designed for physical or minimally virtualized environments, be a better fit? Just as different personality traits pair well with specific people, different editions of Windows Server 2012 pair well with specific HP ProLiant Gen8 servers.  From Foundation, to Datacenter (with Essentials and Standard in between) HP ProLiant has the ideal server to pair with each edition of Windows Server 2012! Once you have your customer’s ideal Windows Server 2012 edition selected, be sure to pick the best HP ProLiant Gen8 server for them too.

2. Ask yourself, “What else can I offer them to enhance their experience?”

Once you understand your customer’s needs, and have a few ideal matches picked out for them, the next step is to ask yourself, “What else will enhance their experience”.  It is important to remember that it is not just about pairing Windows Server 2012 with an HP ProLiant Gen8 server, you must consider all of your customer’s server needs.

For example, it is important to consider any licensing needs your customer may have. With Windows Server 2012 Standard and Datacenter editions, Client Access Licenses (CALs) are no longer bundled, so the purchase of additional CALs will be required. So you must not only consider the ideal WS2012/Gen8 pairing, but must also take into consideration any CAL needs. (BONUS: If you have any questions about CALs this Coffee Coaching video, “CALs 101” may be able to help!)

After you figure out your customer’s CAL needs, there are many other features of HP ProLiant servers to consider. HP Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) management processors for HP ProLiant servers virtualize system controls to help simplify server setup, engage health monitoring and power thermal control, and promote remote administration across and ships standard on every HP ProLiant server product line.

For customers looking for HP iLO Advanced functionality, such as graphical remote console, multi-user collaboration, video record/playback and many more features can be activated with the optional licensing for HP iLO Advanced or HP iLO Advanced for BladeSystem licenses. Make sure you understand your customer’s needs and whether iLO or iLO Advanced would best fill these needs.(Bonus #2: Did you know that Coffee Coaching has an iLO series to help answer all of your iLO questions?)

Another feature to consider is HP Insight Control. HP Insight Control can help your customer transform their data center into the best run server infrastructure. This management software delivers deep insight, precise control, and ongoing optimization for the ProLiant infrastructure. With HP Insight Control, users can deploy and migrate servers quickly, monitor infrastructure health continuously, manage performance proactively, control servers from anywhere, and optimize power and energy effectively. Insight Control can be purchased bundled with HP BladeSystem enclosures and ProLiant servers or as standalone software.

When finding the perfect pairing for your customer, you should not only consider the Windows Server 2012 edition and HP ProLiant Gen8 server that will fit them best, but also any additional licenses and features that would benefit the customer so it is not only an ideal pairing, but a complete perfect solution.

3. Think of the IT infrastructure as a long-term investment

When looking for the perfect pairing it is important to think of the IT infrastructure as a long-term investment. Just as in a personal relationship, sometimes customers can be anxious about committing to a Windows Server 2012 edition for the long term. This is usually the case when they anticipate their business growing in the future. However, this is not a problem with Windows Server 2012. When a customer starts with Windows Server 2012 Essentials, which supports up to 25 users and 50 devices, and their needs increase, they can perform an in-place license transition from Windows Server 2012 Essentials to Windows Server 2012 Standard. Once the transition is completed, the user account and devices limits are removed, but the features that are unique to Windows Server 2012 Essentials (such as the Dashboard, Remote Web Access, and client computer backup) remain available for up to 75 users.

4. Make sure you are offering products that deliver qualities your customers seek

The main thing to remember when recommending your customer’s ideal pairing is to make sure you offer products that fit best with the qualities they seek. With HP and Microsoft working together, this process becomes easier than ever! One way these companies work together is through the worldwide HP/Microsoft Frontline PartnershipFLP is a 20-year alliance unique to the industry. It ensures that Microsoft and HP products have been designed and engineered to work together, and are supported by both companies. This means HP and Microsoft are doing all that they can to ensure the products your customers receive are the very best they can be.

We hope these tips help you find your customer’s perfect match!
