Gen8? Gen9? What’s the difference?
Do you understand the real differences between the newest generation of Hewlett Packard Enterprise ProLiant Servers, Gen9, and the previous generation, Gen8? Knowing, “they’re the latest and greatest” (although true) simply doesn’t cut it anymore. We know that IT managers (like you) are constantly being asked to do more with less and understanding the real differences between generations can be a big help as they are looking to refresh their servers.
Today, we are here to teach you the ins and outs of the HPE ProLiant Gen9 server family and help you see how a new server will help you save money, make money, and reduce costs.
In this session of Coffee Coaching, David Bartley, an Intel Alliance Manager for Hewlett Packard Enterprise, takes you through some of the new features you will find in HPE ProLiant Gen9 Servers.
So, what is new with HPE ProLiant Gen9? To start, HPE ProLiant Gen9 Servers are completely standardized on Intel’s Xeon Haswell processors. Customer’s needs are increasingly diversifying, and Intel has listened to and addressed their concerns. With the Intel Haswell family, you can choose between 26 different CPU options, up to 18 cores, and you get a 50% increase in L3 cache to ensure you’re getting the right processor for the right workload.
In the ProLiant Gen8 family, the e (Essentials) and p (Performance) designations were assigned to various server models. With the Gen9 family, the portfolio has expanded with common Intel architecture and the naming convention now better represents the features and positioning for the ProLiant Gen9 servers.

Another great feature of the ProLiant Gen9 portfolio is the migration to DDR4 memory from DDR3. And, HPE continued the Gen8 color coding of the DIMM slots in Gen9 to simplify memory configuration and upgrades. **For complete memory configuration details please see the QuickSpecs**
The HPE ProLiant Rack and Tower server portfolio includes the following feature user-inspired innovations to make IT simpler:
- HPE Smart Socket guides simplify easy access for processor installation
- HPE Smart Array Controllers deliver enterprise-class RAID controllers that enhance performance, data availability, and storage capacity
- HPE SmartDrives, SmartMemory, along with HPE Flexible Network adapters provide easy configuration options to enhance efficiencies
- HPE iLO4 Management is found throughout the Gen9 Rack and Tower portfolio for consistency for support management with an online personalized dashboard and iLO Mobile application for anytime/anywhere access
Last, but certainly not least, HPE has designed the ProLiant Gen9 portfolio to save you money on the price and total cost of ownership of the server. Gen9 can now get 3x the compute power per watt, which translates to up to 62% cost savings over the life of the server including the initial acquisition cost. HPE also provides 66x faster service delivery with simple automation for a competitive advantage, improving SLA performance.
Between all the new features and savings on cost, you can be assured you get the best solution for your workload! Learn more about HPE ProLiant Gen9 servers and keep up to date with the latest HPE announcements by joining our Coffee Coaching communities on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
